In the city of Cologne they drink and brew Kolsch Beer and the brewers’ guild has protected it since 1254. Kölsch is a top-fermented ale, a throwback to the days before lagers took over the Germanic world. Kölsch offers the simple pleasures of a well crafted beer. It is very pale, the aromatics are a light mélange of hops, malt, and fruit. The Kölsch Beer maintains a bitterness that is quite restrained, although the palate is light-bodied and bone-dry, with a soft malt flavor in the center giving way to a drying, slightly acidic finish. Smoothness is conferred by one to two months of cold conditioning. Kölsch makes an excellent replacement for Stella Artois beer drinkers! Subtle flavors with a unique yeast strain direct from Cologne make this an authentic Kölsch style beer.

Very pale, appley, bit grassy aroma, taste is more authentic, with light bitterness, light pale malt, a bit too sweet in the finish.

Tap at Garage 39. Nice, biscuity, bready nose, right on, with light lemon and grass. Deep golden, clear. Clean, lemony flavor, prefect crispness, a proper kolsch, with bready malts, light, and just enough hops.

As part of a sampler tray during my visit to Bellingham Extremely light golden crystal clear with a nice full bright white head. Sheets of sticky persistent lacing. Faint light grain aroma and classic laid back lager palate. Refreshing and clean.

Sample at GABF 10/13/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. The beer is a clear straw color with a medium white head and spotty lacing. Aroma of malt and grassy hops. Light-bodied with flavors of bready malt, mild hops and fruit. The finish is mildly bitter with an herbal hops aftertaste. Above average Kölsch overall.

Shaker pint draft at the brewpub in Bellingham, Washington. Pour is perfectly clear golden yellow with a one inch pure white head. There are a bunch of effervescent bubbles rising to the surface throughout the beer. Aroma is mildly sweet maltiness, with grass and mineral earthiness. Taste is a perfect combination of the mild sweetness, grassy hay and mineral. Soft, super and fresh, perfectly clean, delicious. Palate is medium to thin bodied, active carbonation - clean and dry in the finish. Crazy drinkable, really nice stuff.
