Our Scotch Ale became a Northwest classic with the inaugural brew in 1995. The Long Boil in the Kettle Caramelizes the wort, producing deep-copper tones. Scotch Ale’s signature malt character is crafted for pure enjoyment.

Pours with a ruby-copper body and a huge and very languishing head. The aroma is soft fruity malts with a hint of caramel and cherry. The taste is heavy malt and a sharp alcoholic finish. It’s pretty, but it needs a lot more work to become truly tasty.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours murky amber / brown with a beige head. Aroma of caramel, sweet dark malts and candied sugar. Flavour is quiet sweet, with whiskey to counteract, candied sugar, caramel and booze (even though it's only 6.4%). Thin palate and the flavours sort of dissolve on the finish. Decent scotch.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours a dark ruddy copper with a foamy beige head. Roasted, lightly smoky, malt aroma. Medium plus body with mild carbonation. Flavor is lightly smoky roasted malt with hop. Slightly more sweet than otherwise. Good stuff. Not at all sticky.

Orange-red murky body, thin buff head. Otherwise caramely aroma flawed by buttery diacetyl notes. Some sourish wet socks characteristics. Thin caramely body with musty fermented fruits (pear) and light earthy, leafy hops. Significantly flawed.

Draught at the brewpub. Hazy dark brown. Sweet and fruity with thick, syrupy mouthfeel. Molasses covers all other flavours. Thick, raw and unpleasant. All the things I do not waht a scotch ale to be.

January 2005 draught at Redbones. Maroon and chestnut colors mix about in the body, though it is very clear, with a small beige head atop. Aroma has ripe blackberries and boysenberries, tart raspberries and a bit of caramel. Flavor continues on with the fruity overtones, while the malt in the background is quite dry, and generally lacking in depth and force. Progresses in to a chewy toffee/caramel and finishes watery with a dry, grainy malt meets hops. Medium body at best, with way too much thinning and wateriness. Not much complexity, moderate carbonation.
