As projects go, beer and chocolate is probably about as good as it gets. The head on collision of a famous British beer maker with an innovative chocolate maker has been as exciting as it has been rewarding with results that taste as good as the pedigree should suggest. We think of this creation as a well balanced and fulfilling drink with a hint of chocolate that is both unexpected and beautifully complimentary.

Bottle. I must admit I was expecting a dark beer, a Schwarzbier or something, but when pouring it I notice it’s golden colored. Almost clear, with a dense, finger-thick off-white head on top. There’s certainly chocolate in the aroma, in a quite nice way, but combined with the golden lager it gives an artificial impression. Some grass and pine cones in the back, not much maltyness. It’s medium to full-bodied, quite dry and with a tad too much carbonation. The flavor has the same chocolate feeling found in the aroma, nice, but still not really there. There’s some bitterness, a decent piney touch and some pale malts in the back. Some citrusy notes. Long chocolate finish mixed with a quite hoppy pale lager. Not really sure how to rate this one. It’s a nice beer indeed, but the combo of chocolate and a pale beer... Well, I like it, but at the same time there’s parts of it I don’t like. 150818

Bottle from Tesco Extra Aylesbury, consumed at home Sunday 19th July 2015 Hazy light silvery/gold with a white head. Chocolate on the nose, quite pronounced in fact, this also transfers into the mouth. Lagery, but sweet lager flavours, it’s a bit weird and reminds me of of ’pain au chocolate’, it is ok. Bottle from Tesco. Regular lager yellow, maybe a shade and a half darker. Lots of carbonation but very little head and no lacing. Smells of chocolate, malt, a bit of chilli, lime, orange peel, rose petal. A bit bizarre, but certainly pleasant. Taste is pretty foul though. Bitter, acrid and soapy with a bitter bilous finish. It’s not a good drink unfortunately.

330ml bottle: BBD Jan 2016. Poured into an American ’Coors Banquet’ vase shaped glass at home on 26 Jun 2015. Got to admit I expected a darker bodied beer: this was lager like, golden, clear and bright, on top a white foam blanket. Milk chocolate nose and initial taste, then the lager takes over and the chocolate fades to a more bitter flavouring within the brew. Different and tasty enough: glad I’ve had one, will not be rushing out for another (TESCO’s).

330ml Bottle - Tesco - Clear golden with an off white head that holds well enough. Nose is chocolate malt, some honey in the back. Taste catches you out, chocolate in a golden beer, even though the title warns you. It works for me in a strange way.

Bottle. Nose smells like British chocolate, hint of cereal and hops. It’s what you’d expect. Taste is dark chocolate, cereal, and larger. Glad they have avoided the mistake of making a chocolate beer that tastes like a British Dairy Milk which never works, and the chocolate is pronounced and well developed but it doesn’t work in a larger.

Bottle. Pours yellow, with a big creamy head. Aroma is quite surprising with sweet chocolate malts, vanilla, honey, toffee and wet earthy notes. Medium body, with average carbonation. Flavour is sweet roasted malts, with bread and toffee, as well as notes of chocolate and some earth. Interesting, but probably not so much in in larger quantities.
