Bottle, 398 yen, picked up at Yamaya. Very much a dark brown pour rather than the black I associate with chocolate beers. This has a very strong chocolate aroma which is nice BUT it smells like chocolate syrup or ovaltine/milo... the label says it is made with sugar & cacao beans though. The body is medium with a slightly watery mouthfeel I am guessing the sugar lets them bump up the ABV while dropping the malt content. The taste is not at all beer like, think chocolate drink or powder. For me this is a miss, drinkable as an alcoholic chocolate beverage but not as a chocolate beer.

330 ml bottle. Pours dark reddish brown, small head that disappears fast. Aroma - is pure chocolate, these cocoa beans are really upfront! Actually there is almost nothing else, chocolate aroma is overwhelming. Taste is quite dry and this beer tastes like cocoa. There are some sour malt notes if you try hard - but other than that cocoa beans, dark dark chocolate - and not enough malt base or hop flavours to balance it out. There is some bitterness alright, but it seems to be coming from the cocoa beans, not from hops. I sometimes like bold beers but in this case I don’t really think they should have gone with this recipe - it still needs more work.

Bottle from Yamaya. Big chocolate nose, dry, rich, nutty. Not very beer-like, but pleasant. Dark brown with orange tints and a nice, fine head. Chocolate flavor, some dark malts, mostly cocoa fudge with a bit of nuttiness. Simple, not much beer character. Not terrible, but not all that good either.
