Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been
brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks
subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their
blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing.
21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to
develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop
fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s
Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous
desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Purchased at Bierkraft in Brooklyn, NY; enjoyed at a good friends place closely by. Appearance a very deep ruby / brown, very cloudy and dirty, with thin off white head. Aroma remarkably complex, notes of cinnamon and vanilla, also of dark fruits and a touch of Belgian yeast, also a bit sweet with noticeable carbonation. Taste is pretty remarkable, I can’t really describe it, very smooth and drinkable but still retains its boozeyness, also a mixture of dark fruits, caramel, Belgian yeast and a touch of cinnamon. One of the more unique ones I’ve had.

Pours deep mahogany into a snifter. Off-white head recedes to nothing leaving no lacing. Vanilla and molasses aromas. Dry, sweet raisins uypfront turning to vanilla in the sweet lasting finish.

Whole Foods, DC 4-pack ($10): Pours a non-transparent brown color with a beige head that leaves a modicum of lacing. Aroma of fruits, as well as plenty of malts, and a little touch of yeast. Some bitterness from the hops, but mostly deals with the malty and the fruity flavors. Body has moderate carbonation. I don’t think that this is too sweet at all. Pretty good methinks.

Can on 06/26/2010. Clear dark copper body with a small off-white head. Sweet caramel, sugar and light belgian spice aroma. Sweet caramel, raisins, and belgian spice flavor. Slightly astringent. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. 7/4/6/3/13 - 3.3 Bottle from Once Upon a Vine - North on 04/12/2010. Clear ruby body with a large frothy tan head. Dark malt, some spice and candi sugar. Very sweet sugary flavor, almost bubble gum with some dark malt in the finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. 7/3/5/2/11 - 2.8

Can, 8.3%. Malty aroma, sweet dark malts, some dried fruits. Cloudy, muddy dark red brown colour. Small tan head. The flavour starts off quite sweet and malty. Not sugary as such, but a bit sweet. OK balanced by a roasted maltiness and some warming alcohol. Dried fruits in the flavour as well, along with a bit of yeast in the finish. There is also a tart fruit note in the finish, almost like a good kriek, albeit much more subtle. Tastes Belgian, and better than many original Belgian beers.

$2.75 can from Beer Run, Charlottesville. Pours a reddish brown with a large frothy head. Slight cherry in the aroma - lots of malt. Sweet dark fruit in the mouth... some cinnamon as well. Tasty.
