Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been
brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks
subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their
blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing.
21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to
develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop
fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s
Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous
desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Tasting @ Home with J&C, October 2011. Can thanks to Blomster ! DArk slightly hazy amber color, tiny head. Very rich, sweet malty aroma, caramel,brown sugar, ripe fruit. Flavour is similar to the aroma. Sweet, fruity malty, lots of caramel, quite complex but very balanced . Wish I had much more of this.

Can. A hazy dark red beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, spices, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes fo malt, caramel, and alcohol, as well as lighter notes of straw, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks David Cohen. Hazy brown. Aroma of dark fruits, licorice and a bit of sweet spiciness. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, dark fruits, a bit of cinnamon and alcohol, especially towards the finish. Medium-bodied. Not really bad but not my cup of tea.

Can 12fl.oz.Light unclear medium to dark red amber colour with a average to large, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, light to moderate hoppy, moderate to heavy yeasty, ripped dried dark fruit, light alcohol. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, caramel, vanilla notes. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20111008]

Pours caramel brown. Tan head. Nose/taste of caramel, dark cherries, toffee, vanilla and dark fruit. Medium body. Sweet finish.

Absolutely delicious beer, almost sour like a flemish red or bruin. Dark like a dubbel with a very complex taste, very belgian, but definitely has a bit of a sour back end to it which actually adds to the enjoyment.

Canned at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Hazy mahogany colour, no head. Aroma of treacle and caramel. Sweet and full bodied with oily well rounded mouthfeel. Marzipan-like yeast character, notes of cramberry and pear esters. Lightly warming finish with low bitterness.

(Can, Oliver Twist, Stockholm) Dark ruby colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit, caramel, figs, cinnamon and red fruit. Fruity, malty taste with notes of caramel, dried fruit, figs, vanilla, hints of oak wood, dark cherries and muscovado sugar. Slightly bitter-sweet finish. More than medium body, fairly sweet. Quite different, but nice and tasty.

12 oz can into tulip. Pours a brownish-orange with a medium light-beige collapsing head. Aroma is strong in banana, faint cinnamon also. Taste is sweet and lightly tangy, fruity. Boozy hot alcohol singes the throat. Carbonation and body are medium. Starts out really good and starts going downhill about halfway through. Ends cloyingly sweet and starts losing carbonation. A big hot mess.

Had the 10 and 11 version. 10 is clearly better. More rounded and tart.09 was much more,Sour, rounded with good chocolate and dark fruit notes. Nice beer.
