Monk’s Blood pays homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been
brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks
subsist solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their
blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing.
21st Amendment founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan traveled to Belgium to
develop the recipe for this special beer, visiting small, traditional breweries in the hop
fields of west Flanders, not far from the famous Trappist abbey of Westvleteren. Monk’s
Blood is designed to pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous
desserts or just by itself, in a Belgian tulip glass, with a good book by the fire.

Can from Elizabeth Station, Bellingham, WA
Dark amber to brown color, hazy, with small fizzy head, not persistent. There is a mild aroma of sweet candi caramel and some Ale yeast and relative fruity touch. Correct body strength; caramel flavor, candi sugar, lean mouthfeel, moderate sweetness; there is an unfortunate impression of sweet liquorice and vegetables; it has relatively low bitterness.
Once again, an American/Belgian boring-ish beer.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/26/2012. Pours lightly cloudy red copper color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of molasses, banana, clove, pear, fig, cinnamon, allspice, dark bread, candi sugar, oak, pepper, and yeast spiciness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity. Taste of prune, brown sugar, fig, dark bread, toast, cinnamon, clove, ripe banana, oak, candi sugar, earth, and yeast spiciness. Lingering notes of dark fruit, brown sugar, dark bread, toast, candi sugar, clove, cinnamon, banana, earth, oak, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Solid flavor balance and good complexity; a touch too bready and spicy; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very good Belgian strong dark ale. Nice complexity and solid flavor balance; and very smooth to sip on. I enjoyed this quite a bit.

Nice rich caramel coloured body with a bright ruby glow, a thick, four centimetre tall tan head and some suspended particles throughout. Aroma of pungent yeast, wheat, malt, pit fruits, a ton of raisins and an earthy hoppiness noticeable. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong yeastie and caramel flavours throughout with a lot of earthy malt, some toffee and pit fruit notes and a pleasant spicey and almost floral bite at the end. Aftertaste shows some alcohol warmth, a bit of spices still, and a light cherry and concord grape flavour mixed with some chocolate notes too. Overalll, a good and rather complex beer - all in a perfect can. I sampled this twelve ounce can purchased from La Bodega in Anchorage, Alaska on 23-June-2011 sampled at home in Washington on the other end of the country on 17-November-2012.

Can at Saraveza, pours a cloudy dark amber wit ha big beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, cinnamon, vanilla and slight oak. Flavour of dark fruits cinnamon, vanilla and oak chips. The dried fruits linger along with the cinnamon ad vanilla. Becomes a little cloying the more you drink. Very good B.S.A.

Full bodied with warm, strong alcohol taste. Sweet dark fruit; vanilla. I liked it, but its not something I would seek out.

Good beer, a little hot for the abv, but quaffable nonetheless. Not too much on the nose, candi sugar and toffee but only fleeting notes. Taste doesn’t quite live up to the promise of the adjuncts; there’s a remarkable number of ingredients in this beer, yet mainly I’m getting what tastes to be a solid American Dubbel. Starts dry, but quickly gains a deep, boozy Belgian slant, hints of vanilla poking through. Starts to get sticky as it warms, but the oak equalizes the sugariness, to a point. Make sure you try to read the goddamn novel on the can before you finish the beer. That font is a bitch.

Pours a hazy reddish-brown color with a medium beige head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Aroma of caramel malt, yeast and dark fruit. Medium body with a dark malty character and notes of yeast, spices, cherry and raisins. The finish is fruity with a hint of malt left behind. Above average all around.
