This full-bodied dry stout bottled in County Carlow, south-west of Dublin is based on an authentic recipe first introduced around 1740. Its taste was said to make grown men weep for more! Its unique blend of roasted malts, grains and bitter hops ensures a deliciously balanced and smooth flavor.

Bottle from Marks & spencer. Tasty stout, with a body of roasted malt and nice notes of coffee and cacao. Nice roasted aftertaste. Good beer, especially for a supermarket.

Bottle. A very dark brown beer with a reddish hue. A small, beige head on top. Coffee, chocolate and and some faint bonfire notes. Some bitterness in the aroma, as well as chocolate and coffee. Medium body with a nice carbonation. Roasted finish with coffee and chocolate. A really nice one, but it gets sort of flat after a while. 140416

Bottle from M&S Den Haag. Poured a clear dark brown with a think broken off white head. The aroma is roasted malt, a little creamy, yeast, light hop. The flavour is medium bitter with a light watery grass hop bitter spice palate and a short bitter finish. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. More like a black IPA to me.

500ml bottle. Dark brown-black colour, tan head and aroma of roasted malt with chocolate, treacle, brown sugar. Roasted malt flavour with smokey, dark fruits, earthy hop notes. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bodied, soft carbonation, dry light roast bitter finish. Quite drinkable.

50cl Bottle from M&S A’dam. Almost black, creamy light-beige head. Aroma of cocoa powder, milk chocolate, hard roasted malts, coffee. Flavour of hard roasted malts, milk chocolate, coffee, light fruity touch, cocoa, nice dry bitter finish. Light-bodied, smooth. Good stout imho.

On the train from Hereford to Inverness, bottle from M&S Camberley, 18/10/13. Light black with a moderately appointed light tan head. Nose is roast malts, cocoa, cardboard, earthy tang. Taste comprises earthy cocoa, cardboard box (Living !), light roast, puff of smoke. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, dry finish with light roast and a touch papery. Middle of the road affair, nothing I’d rush back to.

bottle from M&S, Rocca al Mare, Tallinn. Quite typical irish stout, good to see that there are more good beers beside Guinness Aroma - roasted malts, bread crumbs. Taste initially sweetish-acidic, you can feel the carbonation and smokiness of the beer. Later some hop bitterness ensues and lingers along for a while. Didn’t really catch the coffee and chocolate that was promised on the label, maybe only some bitter coffee beans. Good beer, would like to sip it while sitting at a pub in Dublin.

Bottle at home. Black dark caramel colour. Thick dark beige head that fades to a thin loose layer. Aroma is big chalk mineral, some soap and dark fruit yeast esters. Nice rounded roast and dark fruit. Medium duration raost finish. Chalky dry palette. A little thin.
