A decadent oatmeal stout. Velvet Merlin offers robust cocoa and espresso aromas with subtle American hop nuances. Rich dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with a creamy mouth feel and wonderfully dry finish create the perfect balance in this full-bodied stout. Ideal for sipping in the winter months or at the end of a meal.

Bottle at Q-Brick. Black with a great, fine, tall head. Rich malt aroma, oats, grains, light berries. Meaty and moreish flavor, grains, light roasting, light fruits, cream. Smooth, full palate. Quite sweet, but with a nicely bitter hop finish. Lovely.

Pour is dark brown - high, fizzy carbonation - a fair amount of tan lace - nose of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, licorice, a bit of hard water mineral/chalk - the carbonation is a bit too high at first, not giving you themcreamy texture you really want, but it settles after a while and is a little more mellow - a tiny bit watery, but the flavor is good - medium dry and moderately bitter - baker’s chocolate and espresso - a bit of vanilla and anise - slight mineral - dry, semi-tart finish, with a touch of earthy, woody character - opens up considerably as it warms, adding a warm, spicy character - a damn fine stout, just needs a tad more heft to launch it into awesome territory.

Bottled. A hazy brown beer with a red shine under a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of straw, roasted malt, and metal. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and a bit of wood, leading to a dry and roasted finish. The body is light.

Sample on Day 2 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/13/2011. Cola-colored pour with a medium light beige head that dissipates steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Pours black with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of malt and coffee, along with a touch of chocolate. Medium, creamy body with flavors of mocha, mild hops and malt. The finish is sweet milk chocolate. Above average overall.
