A decadent oatmeal stout. Velvet Merlin offers robust cocoa and espresso aromas with subtle American hop nuances. Rich dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with a creamy mouth feel and wonderfully dry finish create the perfect balance in this full-bodied stout. Ideal for sipping in the winter months or at the end of a meal.

$2 Single from Lemon Tree. Dated 2/21/13. Low key smell with some chocolate and black patent malt. Solid black body, a short light tan head. Taste has some milk chocolate, a bitter hop note I don’t find in a lot of session stouts. Mouthfeel is between a force carbonated beer and a cask or nitro pour. No added stale stout to this one. Enjoyable.

Draught @ CBC2013. Pours brownish black with a small goldensih beige head that is rather quick to dissipate and doesn’t leave much trace on the glass while doing so. Smell is malty with sweet dark bread, roasted malts, coffee, burnt cereal, chocolate and charred wood. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, dark bread, burnt cereal, cocoa powder, dark roast coffee, charred wood and very subtle hints of laundry detergent. Mouthfeel is round, soft and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and bitter with roasted malts, dark roast coffee, pumpernickel bread, charred wood and burnt grains.

Got in a trade with swingracex. 12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 2/21/2013. Pours fairly crystal clear almost opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of milk chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, oats, toast, brown bread, light coffee, floral, and roasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt notes with oats and light hops. Taste of milk chocolate, cocoa, oats, roasted malt, toast, brown bread, light coffee, floral, and roasted earthiness. Slight earthy roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, oats, roasted malt, light coffee, toast, and light earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance of roasted/bready malt flavors with oats and light hops; with nice robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish; moderately dry on the finish as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and crisp mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice oatmeal stout. All around nice flavor balance and robustness; and extremely smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Refrigerated 12 oz. bottle from Joe poured into a shaker. Pours black with small dark brown highlights with small beige head. Little lacing, medium/thin body, medium/low carbonation, and light oat aroma. Taste is roasty, some dark chocolate, herbal hops, some coffee, and ash finish. Complex taste, but not one of my favorites. Better as it warms.
