Re-rate 9/8/09: Bottle at Bier Circus in Brussels. Dark reddish-brown color with a bit of beige foam. Aroma of wood, cherries, caramel and cookie hints. Sweet-sour flavor with some slightly sugary maltiness, cherries, wood, some earth and a nice soft semi-dry finish. Medium-bodied. I like it. 7/3/7/4/15=3.6

[11/12/08] Draught at Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia. As Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale. Deep red-brown color with a big rocky beige head. Aroma of malt, sugar, some cherries, some woody and musty notes and light soapiness. Sweet sugary flavor (too sweet) with some cherries notes, mild oaky sourness and yeasty notes. Medium-bodied. Enjoyable but too sweet. 7/4/7/3/13=3.4

Deep ruby red. medium white head. Aroma of sour cherries and malt. Vinegar flavor. Sort of a ess complex version of Rodenbach, similar to their "Alexander" which is no longer brewed. Not much of a finish.

Marked as Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale. Pours with a large, light brown head and a clear copper body. Head leaves good retention. Aroma of vinegar, sourness, cherry and soy. Flaver is sweet with vinegar, splenda or some sort of backsweetner, and a bit of meat. Easily an Oud Brune. Lightly fizzy with a dry mouthfeel. Not memorable.

My first beer in Philadelphia at the Monks Cafe 15-11-08. Deep reddy brown colour and with a lovely sweet and sour bite. Nicely tangy but sweetness is just a little too much, some balsamic vinegar on the nose, malt also present, good beer.

(25 cl bottle at Haket, Göteborg)On July 24, 2008BB 22/06/10 Clear dark copper color, smallish tan head. acidic to sour scent, also lactic and some red currants mixed with sour cherry. Also smells of cinnamon, nutmeg and metal. Acidic, gooseberry, red currants not quite ripe, metal and some malt taste. Acidic, lactic and red berries aftertaste. Spritzy mouthfeel, but not too much. Low bitterness. Aftertaste is also some marzipan. Perhaps I’m warming up to this style after all? Turns shady with the last of the bottle.

Bright beige head, which leaves lacing. Dark reddish color. Aroma is sour fruit. Lots of fruit. Berries methinks. Tart cherries in the flavor. It is pretty sour. Dry finish. Quite interesting.

Bottle, Belgian Belly, Manchester. Hazy reddish brown colour with a thin muddy white head. Woody, sour, somewhat acidic fruit aroma. Sour black cherry flavour with a sour finish. A decent exponent of the genre for sure.

Red brown with a bubbly, disappearing off-white head. Funky aroma with plenty leather and fruit notes. Very tart flavour with malt and leather notes. Delicious sourness
