Bottle. Deep ruby-brown color with an off-white head. Tart, lemony aroma. Tart, citric flavor with some backing cany sugar. Nice sweet/sour balance. Refreshing.

Draught at Barley John’s. Dark red and a thick lacing head. Aroma of balsamic vinegar and cherries & other fruits. Fairly sour, a little fruit sugar, and oak. Thanks to Robertsreality for this beer. Also sampled as Monks Cafe.

Thanks to Suttree for the bottle! Pours with a large head of creamy off-white over a brown body with lots of red throughout. Fruity sour aroma, citrus just beginning to rot. Lightly sweet with a smooth, strong tartness. Light body. I’m not a true lover of sours, but this was o.k. for me.

Cloudy brown, minimal head.Tart sour nose. The palate is tart and sour as well but leans too much toward the acetic side. Not one of the better examples of the style.

Pours hazy brown into a tulip. Microbubble head with nice retention. Sour cherry and vinegar notes and flavor is just like the aroma. Thin with a bitter cherry finish. A nice style to investigate during warmer months...

Bottle Pours a murky dark cider colored with only a race of fizzy, short lived head. Minimal coarse lacing. Nice tart aroma of apples, raisons, pears and a little spicy leathery notes. Flavor is similar but mostly apples. Like that apple-butter I used to have as a kid. Very lively carbonation. Fizzy even, I’d say. Clean finish. Refreshing. Nice.

Bottled. Dark reddish-brown with a medium beige head. Not 100% clear. Fruity and sour aroma, with a flavor that has wood, acidity and fruitiness. Green apples kind of acidity. Full, astringent body, but more commercial than Rodenbach Grand Cru. Rating: 6-4-6-4-13-3.3. (060210)

Bottle, 25cl. It pours a reddish brown body, hazy with lots of floating chunck. Huge, big-bubbled, beige head and wonderful lacings. Berry-ish, cellary aroma with some vinegar and sugar. Full-bodied, quite effervescent and astringent mouthfeel with raspberry vinegar and some cellar and lemon. Some bitterness in the far back. Sugars are present too, but very moderate. Lemony, vinegary finish that lasts. A very refreshing and quenching beer that doesn’t get too extreme in any way.(090419)

Large frothy off-white head with a clear caramel colored body. Sweet yet somewhat earthy aroma. Seet flavor that finishes lightly sour.

On tap at the Hop Leaf, Nov. 11, 2005 (Monks Café Flemish Sour Red Ale). Red copper ale with a thin white head. Light sour wild cherries in aroma. In mouth, very classy flemish sour, with lactic notes and raisin sweetness. Lighter bodied than expected. Not bad.
Earlier Rating: 8/1/2005 Total Score: 3.3
Red brown ale with a thin off-white head. Sour cherries in aroma with brown sugar notes. In mouth, more sour cherries with lemony and eathy notes. A thin to medoium bodies compliments this well. Bottle at L’Autre Oeil, Summer 2005.
