"My goodness," muttered Claus, recalling his visit to the Institute, "the restrictive outerwear, the padded room - even padded Christmas tree ornaments. Horrifying ! Yet the little chap seems happier than he's ever been." Claus took a thoughtful sip of a most warming red ale. "Perhaps sanity is over-rated... Ho,ho,ho!"

Bottle from the Bottle Bank. Appearance - amber with a thin head. Nose - rich orange but the malt in the background has just a hint of cardboard coming from it - all the same, inviting. Taste - orange blossom honey. Palate - rich and full bodied with a big rich texture and and sweet but still fairly balanced finish. Overall - it’s a big beast and it’s enjoyable.

Several samples at Cafe Amsterdam.
The appearance was a light colored caramel with a slight transparency about it. Light carbonation was seen rising at a moderate pace. A little white head was there and that dissipated fairly quickly.
The smell had a weird grainy and somewhat sweet cereal - esque quality with a sugary toffee to it.
The taste copied the smell and that had a light candy aftertaste to it.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a slight sessionability about it. 11.5%? Uhh...it didn’t seem that way to me.
Overall, I say this was a weird barleywine as I want to say that the smell seemed a bit weird to me along with the taste. I don’t think I would try this again.

Bottle. Almost clear in the glass, golden in color and with a dense, finger-thick beige head. The aroma is one the malty side, with alcohol and a touch of acetone. Some piney hints. The flavor is pretty sweet, with caramel maltyness, bready hints, alcohol and acetone. Full body with alcohol warmth. Lasting finish. Too much alcohol in this one. Not particularly good actually. 141213

330ml bottle, 2013 vintage, Beers of Europe. Because of the cartoon label and name I was expecting this to be a bit of a boozy mess, which is probably why I kept hold of it for a year before drinking. It was boozy, but the booze was well integrated with the red fruit and nuts, sweet caramel and light honey notes. Surprisingly light bodyand colour, long lasting white head. Enjoyable.
