Murphy's Law reversed! When you have an off spec beer you are left with two choices. Dump it or play with it. We at Nøgne Ø believe in seeing the possibilities and grasping the opportunities given. Our miscoloured Saison was put in fresh red wine barrels, and the flavours created we found irresistible. So we made more. This bottle contains a blend of our finest red wine barel aged Saison.

Bottle shared in London on the 42nd floor - many thanks to Matteo. Pours unclear gold with a creamy white head. There’s a bit of damp cloth in he nose, ripe citrus, light yeast, doughy wheat. Light to medium sweet flavor with lightly tangy citrus, some piney spice, more wheat, orange, melon, yeast. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more spicy yeast, lightly toasted wheat, citrus. Just OK.

Bottle at home. Slightly hazy dark orange color with a huge creamy off-white head. Aroma of barnyard, apple cider vinegar, dry hay, cloves, and lemon juice. A little careful. The flavor has more hay, grass, goose berries, pepper, apples bread and wood. Has a slick and soft mouth feel, medium body, and a light to medium bitterness. A decent saison with wild yeast. Well balanced.

Flaske 330ml. Drukket i Stavern 18 Jul 15. Mørk aprikosfarget. Uklar. Svakt syrlig aroma av bær & krydder. Smaken har samme preg. Hårfin balanse mellom surt & søtt. På grensen til kjedelig. Litt bunnfall.

Bottle shared with Dutchdrebus @ Drebus’ birthday tasting. Murky yellow to orange color, average sized white head. Aroma is lightly malts, sweetish, red wine, grapes. Tastes mostly the same: lightly malts, I again get (red) wine influences, grapes, lightly oak / wood. Very weird associations perhaps, but this is what I get. Perhaps it all comes from the yeast. After a while the red wine influence becomes a little less present, but some sort of fruityness remains. Anyway, decent beer.

330 ml bottle. Almost clear, golden body with a big, creamy off-white head. Strong aroma with lot of wood, some malt, fruit and moderate funky. Flavor is surprisingly fresh and acidic, considering quite much wood. Fine body and long lasting aftertaste with more wood, vanilla and some kind of wooden bitterness. Interesting development of the Saison.
There has been some debate regarding the difference in batches here. The breweries intention is to make this beer as consistent in flavor as possible when working with barrels and microorganism. Sampling the two different batches side by side I think they have succeed very well and as the more experienced beer drinker will know this is more a matter about timing than anything else. Tasting #1331 about one year after botteling date resulted a slow gusher, but the best result so far for me. Strong and very smooth wood flavor with a nice tingling sensation of Brett. Will definitively put a few more of this in the basement.
