The first house on this site was built around 1730 and was called Poles. This was leased in 1800 to Sampson Hanbury, a key figure in the London brewery Truman, Hanbury & Buxton. The Hanbury brewing legacy has now been brought back to the 21st century by this celebration premium real ale. This rich copper coloured ale has been handcrafted using the original recipe with a modern twist, producing a flavoursome ale showing spice, honey, underpinned by grapefruit lemon and pine overtones.

440ml can from Mad Squirrel, High Wycombe. Poured a clear light amber colour with a lasting frothy white head and plenty of bubbles. The aroma is malt, light citrus notes, light woody hops. The flavour is moderate bitter, with a smooth, fresh, malt, light biscuit, light sweet fruit, woody hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. One of the best English bitters I ever had.

Bottle at home picked up from the brewery in Hemel. A dull amber coloured pour with a thin greyish head. Aroma is nutty malts, light toffee, vanilla, sweet brown bread. Flavour is composed of chalky, nutty malts, thin grains, little toffee, little apple, thin brown bread. Palate is thin, grainy, moderate carbonation. Pretty lacklustre.

Bottle at home, 29/05/17. Clear golden to light copper with a well appointed off white head with excellent retention. Pour was very lively with a slow trace of foam coming out of the bottle a minute or so later. Nose is light biscuit crumble, faint citric rinds, toasted grains, straw. Taste comprises pale bread, sharp fruit esters, toasted grains, biscuit, grass. Medium bodied, prickly and overcarbed, drying close with an astringent bitter finish. Sub par.
