Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, ruby-brown with a vivacious, khaki head. Lovely aroma, some candied fruits, light toffee, sweet bread. The flavor doesn’t quite match the nose. Medium sweet flavor, quite fruity, with the malty-toffee character taking a backseat. There is a strong, rather unpleasant medicinal booziness in here. Also some toasty malts. Medium bodied, warm, with fine to average carbonation. Warm finish, modestly sweet with boozy fruits, light toasted malts, faint leafy hops. After an auspicious beginning this beer falters.

Apparently sample somewhat aged, unsure how much. Very good, tight dark cream head over opaque brown beer with reddish sheen. Intensely malty, sweetish-aromatic nose with some oxydation, portwine and (dark) honey, inviting. Sweetish/bitterish taste; if well-balanced, rather dullish and way much less complex than the nose. Bit (dark red) fruity & bubblegum. Medium bodied, bit slick, but feeling rather thinnish for a 7% beer. Nose proved remarkable; pity the rest didn’t follow.

33cl bottle from Bierzwerg. Poured dark copper color with a white head, nice lacing. Aroma has caramel, yeast and strong floral and spicy notes, almost perfumy like. Flavor is caramel, hops, yeast, bread and dark fruity flavors. Finish has some alcohol warming, being sweet as well. Almost full bodied. Very easy to drink.

Pretty cloudy dark brown beer, beige head, bit stable and non adhesive. Aroma: pretty fruity, oranges, lemon juice, certain soapiness which isn't very pleasant, caramel, candi sugar. On warming up more mocha and chocolate aromas are being released. Taste: pretty sour start, bit nasty, lemony, then some hops. Aftertaste: soapy, then some hop bitter. Pretty nasty soapy bitter finish with touches of mocha and coffee. This particular flavour, which I call soap, is to be noticed in all of the St. Paul beers. It worked for the special, it was ok for the blond, turning it more to a kind of witbier, but it does definitely not work for the double.

Nice dark color with a little bit red. Poor smell and an aftertaste I didn’t like at all. Decent body for a beer 6.9ABV

Bottle. Dark brown with less than a coat of beige head. A few chunks. Aroma is yeasty with dough and some cheese, caramel, prunes, grass, lemon. Quite porty. Medium bodied. Taste is quite sweet with dark fruit and sugars. Slightly carbonated mouthfeel. Drying finish where some spices emerge. Decent lighter weight dubbel.

Sampled at Vineyards in Ottawa, Ontario (March 2006). This dubbel pours a deep red colour with slight orange. The head is tanned with decent retention and nice foam lacing that stays. Flaky sediments are all over the brew. Aromas of dark fruits and quite nutty. Same for the flavours, nutty throughout with light notes of chocolat malt and a slight taste of smoke and oak wook in the aftertaste. Thin-bodied with some light tart on the tongue. A very well-balanced and light dubbel that is quite refreshing.

Pours a very dark copper, with large off-white head that fades quickly to a layer.Aroma is quite interesting, lots of spices, sweet toffee and roasted malt, wholegrain bread and a hint of vegemite (might be getting a bit old...).Flavour also has a lot of sweet bready malt, hints of molasses and candi sugar. Quite enjoyable.Lovely creamy mouthfeel, but a moderate (low for the style) carbonation which fails to rein in the sweetness.Simple for the style, but quite drinkable although the unbalanced sweetness starts to get a bit cloying.

Deep brown colour, thin head. Very sweet tastewith a warming alcohol kick. Nice malty flavour. Bittersweet finish.
