Before the meaning of the name is revealed for that “ah-ha” moment, we must elaborate on the significance of the collaboration. Three key Stone brewers gathered together with long-time friend and Lost Abbey brewmaster Tomme Arthur in Berlin. There they collaborated on a beer representative of our presence in Germany and the craft beer crusade we have been on and never lost sight of despite all of the words of criticism. Too aggressive, too many hops, too expensive, too impossible to break into centuries of German tradition…all of that was just words. It didn’t break us. And here we are, two decades later with a foothold in Berlin and our fingertips on the international craft beer moment. In honor of that we brewed a dark imperial lager with a German yeast strain and partially aged it with wooden chips “sticks” in stone granite barrels. Ah-ha.

75cl. The nose is malty grainy and dark. The beer starts mild-malty. Caramel, only hints of wood. Deep round malty. Caramel, wood. Dense, not too complex, round and smooth.

Huge thanks to Erzengel for sharing! Beer in the glass brownish, small head. Starts fine malty, modest roasty, light smokey. Some earthy hints. Well balanced finish, malty. Interesting.

750 ml Champagne bottle from Stone. This arrived via FedEx frozen solid. Luckily I was able to defrost it without it breaking. Pours a deep brown, but with highlights showing through. Thick head that settles to a thin "pond scum" of foam. Smell is surprisingly light, not a lot of alcohol or malt, but at least any yeast in the bottle didn't die and skunk it up. Taste is malty without the astringency of dark malt, and just an edge of German noble hops. Extra malt does get a bit sticky on my lips. I'm liking it more as I go along. Flavor does not go off as the bottle dwindles. There is some yeast sediment of perhaps hop bits at the bottom. Toes starting to curl with the alcohol, but it's not "hot" with alcohol at any time. Enjoyable "beer" with no extra foofaw like weird hops or fruit.

Sample during the Dark Lord Dia-beetus 2017 tasting on 10/28/2017. Dark mahogany-brown color with a medium off-white head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of oak, yeast, malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of fruity yeast, grainy malt, oak and mild hops. The finish is fruity with a yeast and malt aftertaste. Above average overall.

Large format, celebration style bottle poured. Split with Tcon. Cheers on the new place! A dark copper pour with plenty of foam head. Love the constant wood character to this. Easy drinking lager rich with caramel, wood, and hints of various spice. Full of flavor. Nice refreshment for a dark imperial pils. Very unique. Pleasant experience with this one.

Bottle. Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has notes of bread and grains with a wood note supporting. Flavor combines bread and wood with some granite and a touch of sweetness.
