This big, glowing, powerful IPA is packed with assertive Northwest hops that are floral, citrusy and resinous. A healthy dose of Munich malt helps to provide backbone and balance against the hoppy attack. The result? Explosive!…

Aroma of biscuity malt, citrus, orange, fruits, pine resin, tea leaves, mild hops. Flavour is light sweet with a medium bitter finish. I usually like my IPA a lot more fruity and less malty, but I gues the tea leaves (which I’m a sucker for) won me over.

West Coast IPA from a 50 cl bottle; at more than one and a half year of age, this is clearly too old for an American IPA, but anyway, I promise I won’t let this get in the way of my appreciation of this Oregon micro brewery, which is completely new to me. Thick and frothy, irregularly edged, egg-white head, thinning but remaining closed for a long time and leaving patches of thick ’membranous’ lacing around the edge, clearly hops-enhanced, crowning a ’sunset’ orange hued, deep and warm golden beer with tiny strings of fizz here and there, lightly hazy, turning equally cloudy and even more intensely ’sunset orange’ with sediment. Aroma is already faded due to age, but still breathes the remnants of powerful hops over a firm malty background, with impressions of moist white pepper, old pine branches, grapefruit peel, ginger powder, dried wormwood, tonic water, old bread crust and dito biscuit, dried out orange flesh, faint hints of parsley, gin, lemon zest, straw, cold fried chicken skin, cardboard, soap. Sweetish fruit in the onset, traces of apricot, apple and vague orange sweetness but everything rather subdued, with a sourish edge as well as the first signs of grapefruity hop bitterness; carbonation remains very soft, a bit too soft even for this style, to my taste at least, but tingles very subtly on the sides of the tongue. Smooth, lightly oily, very supple, soft mouthfeel. Soft cereally sweetish core with a clear toasted edge, gaining some strength in the finish just as the hops, that have been developing in bitterness right from the start, take over completely and ensure a long, spicy, leafy, ’bright green’ bitterness coating the back of the mouth, resinous and tonic water-like with retronasal hints of grapefruit peel and pine, while some juicy maltiness peeps through in the very end; alcohol remains practically hidden. The aroma is clearly suffering from age after 1.5 years on a shelf - unsurprisingly, of course - and showing the first signs of oxidation, apart from having largely lost the more delicate Cascade and Centennial features it must doubtlessly have when fresh; still, based on experience alone, I can feel that this must have been a solid IPA when young, with a firm toasted edge in its malt department to support a strong, rooty and spicy hop bitterness that lasts for a long time. It is that basic bitterness that has remained firmly in place so in the mouth, this beer still behaves more than decent for its style. Too bad for the faded and withering aroma, I’d love to taste this young and ’green’, but from a merely didactical point of view, it is also interesting to taste an IPA at this age if only to experience first hand what age does with it. As for style: this is about as West Coast as it gets even at this age.

Slightly unclear pale amber colour, tall creamy white head to off-white head, good retention and lacing. Aroma pale malts, grain, lemon peel, pine, wet hay. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, caramel, grainy, citrus. Malty dry bitter finish, husky and chalky notes, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, a very nice solid IPA.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 9/8/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy golden orange color with a 2 finger dense and rocky off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of bright citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pine, light honey, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Good amount of pine/citrus rind bitterness after the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon/orange zest, citrus rind, pine, light honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero astringent hop flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness from bitterness as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, and lightly creamy/bready balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice IPA. All around good complexity, robustness, and balance of bright citrus/piney hops and moderate bready malt flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Hazy gold beer, good pale cream colour head. Palate is smooth with modest fine carbonation. Airy pale malts, a little creamy sweetness. Mild orange and a little orange peel. Very mild hop spice. Light finish. Lacks sufficient hop wallop but it’s okay.
