Brewed to celebrate the anniversary of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion the ale proved to be so popular it has become a permanent addition to the range. Based on an eighteenth century recipe the ale is spiced with coriander which gives a remarkably fresh aftertaste.

Bottle @ benzai. Dark amber to copper colour with a small, creamy off-white head. Smells ’lokvoer’ (voor voorn), sweet, hint of vanilla. Tastes sweet, hint of iron/rust, malts, hint of liquoricewood. Thin body, soft carbo.

Bottle 0.33l at Pivo, Oulu. BBE APR 2022. Colour is deep dark brown with small slightly brownish white head. Aromas and flavours: Dark fruits, raisins, nuts, nice balance of dryness and sweetness, some chocolate and malts. Pretty special.

Courtesy of Kraddel. Thanks! 33 cl. bottle split by 2 @ Barely legal tasting room. Pours a blackish dark brown with a spotty beige head. Smells of thick black liquorish and quite a bit of sherry with spices and candy. Tastes of way too much black liquorish, thick yeast, oxidation, gravy, bad quality dates, metallic,… Basically tastes like a not so good Belgian Christmas beer loaded with black liquorish. Body is thick. I had difficulty finishing my glass. I had high expectations of this one and it was a complete letdown. I am frankly baffled by the high ratings here.

Bottle 330 ml at Sheridans pub, Zagreb. Pours brown with beige head. Sweet spicy and fruity aroma. Roasted malts, some chocolate, malts and spices flavor. Nice one.

500 ml bottle into snifter, bottled on 2/1/2012. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, cherry, plum, pear, fig, toffee, toast, apple, molasses, oak, brown bread, chocolate, coriander, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, pear, toast, toffee, apple, oak, brown bread, chocolate, coriander, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, raisin, plum, cherry, fig, pear, toast, toffee, oak, brown bread, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding scotch ale. All around awesome complexity and balance of dark malt, yeast ester, and moderate oak flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

330ml bottle. Not sure why I’ve not rated this before. Had a chance to properly savour it this time. Sweet liquorice of course with a tinge of treacle, ginger and coriander and a lovely sticky mouthfeel. A classic without a doubt.

330ml bottle form Appellation Wines. Pours dark brown, red tinge. No real head. Aromas are toffee malt and light spice. Taste has lots more toffee, and a strange menthol note. No real bitterness. Good clean finish. Pretty good.
