Brewed to celebrate the anniversary of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion the ale proved to be so popular it has become a permanent addition to the range. Based on an eighteenth century recipe the ale is spiced with coriander which gives a remarkably fresh aftertaste.

Poured into a Kwak glass. Appearance is ruby brown, fairly dark, a beige fizzy head which doesn’t last long. Aroma- caramel, fruitcake, port, malty, brown bread, raisin. Taste- chocolate, fudge, caramel, almonds, cherry, sugary fruitcake, slightly fluffy mouthfeel, bitter at first but finishes sweet. Very nice indeed.

330 ml bottle, poured into a wine glass, black, no head. Aroma has some liquorice, dark plums, herbal liquor. Taste has some mild liquorice again, a weak hop bite, some caramel sweetness that gives way for a longer tingling aftertaste. Dry. Feels old. I guess this is nice example of the style, personally not crazy about it.

Subdued chestnut and maple syrup nose. Clear brown, medium yellow head. Wood, pecan, and chocolate syrup. Light to medium body. A touch cloying, at least, far sweeter than its lack of complexity can support.

Bottle from Colonial Spirits. Brilliantly clear dark brown with wonderfully garnet highlights and a smallish off white head that took some coaxing to stir up and dissipated quite quickly. Aromas of stone fruit and brown sugary caramel and toffee with hints of smoke, light wood and non descript spice. The flavor follows through on what the aroma promised. Dark sugary maltiness with hints of caramelized sugars with lots of cherry and almond notes with touches of prunes and raisins. Light spice and alcohol flavor. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet lightly syrupy mouthfeel. Wonderfully complex sipping beer.

Classic spiced Scotch ale since 1995, with a yellowish beige, medium thick but thinning and eventually breaking, moussy head, colour a very dark and clear ruby red, quiet fizz. Rich malty and spicy aroma which initially reminded me a lot of Rochefort 10, with impressions of banana, caramel candy, coriander, port wine, cloves, eucalyptus, raisins, pear, cognac, marzipan, chocolate, hazelnut paste, red wine, liquorice. Sweet onset, candied dates and cherries, rounded, rather thick and oily palate, smooth with a deep caramelly, nutty and eventually more chocolatey maltiness, adorned with strongish retronasal spiciness (especially coriander seed, subjective impressions of ’drop’ and cloves) with drying effect, further spreading into the satisfying, long and warm finish where some liqueurish alcohol, leafy hops and dark bittersweet malts are beautifully interwoven. Deservedly a classic, in which the maltiness combined with the coriander give it a somewhat ’Belgian’ bouquet. I can imagine this tastes less ’common’ to a Scottish or English consumer than to a Belgian one.

0,33L bottle, BB 04.2022. Pours dark ruby-black with light tan head. The head stays for a moment. Aroma is sweet, fruits, caramel. Flavor is sweet, dark plums, raisins, chocolate, hint of spices, cognac like notes. Alcohol is well covered. Overall: great brew.

33 cl. bottle, BBE December 2022... Clear, dark amber colour with a golden tint. Thin, off-white head, that lasts throughout. Fruity aroma with plums, resins, mild chocolate, caramel malts, toast, liquorice, rather spicy. Taste is sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes rather dry and spicy with faint liquorice, dark fruits and light impressions of alcohol. Lovely, rather spicy.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Red brown color, small beige head. Smell and taste malts, slightly iron, slightly a hint of caramel, lightly bitter. Quite hard to describe imo. Decent body and carbonation.
