Bottle at home, 9th June 17. Pours amber, orange, massive amount of yeast left at the bottom of the bottle. Aroma is bitter grapefruit, citrus. Taste is grapefruit, cream, pine, citrus. Unusual dipa....but I like it.

Bottle (from speciaalbierpakket.nl). Pours clear amber. Aroma is hoppy, greassy, citrus, pine. Flavor is sweet and bitter, hoppy, greasy, citrus, caramel, pine. Finish is pine bitter. Covers alcohol well. Overall: good. Ps: The crap in the bottom of the bottle is mostly hops residue, it even looks green when poured out. Haven’t seen this before. Not sure if it is good or bad thing.

Van tap @De Markies, Oranje met witte kraag. Aroma van veel exotische fruiten, den, gras, mango, lychee, zoet. Smaken zijn redelijk bitter, zacht/glad, zoet, redelijk fruitig, den, gras, mango, lychee, ok maar iets te stevig voor op het terras in de zon.

Thanks! Sampled draft @ Beerlovers Bar. Quite hazy orange, creamy white head. Dank sweet thick nose, orange peel, dough, lots of raw dough, bread,…. Taste is weird, heavy on sweet malts, raw dough, cinnamon buns, almost vanilla, hops are drowned out, orange peel,… Thick bready dough,… Decent for a malt forward beer but really not what it should be. Odd.

Kees Bubberman, one of the Netherlands’ genius brewers, seems to be quite into IPA these days, this is his rendition of a West Coast-inspired DIPA, bottle from Etre Gourmet. Thin, eggshell-white head, immediately reduced to a firm rim around the glass and loose ’islands’ in the middle but eventually all but gone, on top of an initially lightly hazy, warm orange blonde beer with somewhat amberish tinge, shifting to a murky ochre-tinged orange halfway throught the bottle, adding a ’cloud’ of yeast suspended in the core of the glass, and eventually looking exactly like swamp water, extremely murky, deeply ochre-coloured and opaque with even a khaki to greenish hue (probably demonstrating the generous amount of hops but looking as hideous and unattractive as any beer can possibly look). The very ending adds an even more unexpected dramatic twist to it, when a bunch of tiny, dark green hop bits cling to the wall of the glass and even remain physically palpable on the lips, like the grit in an unfiltered soup or coffee, effectively rendering the last centiliters physically undrinkable as far as I’m concerned. Expectedly strong, fragrant and notably ’dank’ bouquet of old fermenting orange juice, soaking wet marihuana, pink grapefruit, rainwater, toasted onions, wet toast and soggy ’grey’ rye bread, green peppercorns, unripe mango, fresh green seaweed, ripe tamarillo, olive oil, fainter hints of something iron-like, fried chicken, calvados, pumpkin soup, flat leaf parsley, rust, grilled halloumi cheese, unripe pineapple, dried mint, very (and sufficiently) deeply buried phenolic cloves. Vivid onset, fruity in a clean kind of way but still teeming with impressions of dried mango, unripe green banana, slight lychee and tamarillo, notably sweet in its core (eventually even ’candied’ and marmelade-like) surrounded by a soft, mellow sourishness and pleasant green olive-like umami accents, softly carbonated with a very oily, vinous mouthfeel. Hop bitterness releases its first ’stings’ very early on - an ominous sign, while underneath, a nicely rounded but only restrainedly sweetish biscuity malt body develops, pimped by the deep, earthy spiciness of the rye, adding a soggy grey rye bread-like aspect that fits in very well; the oiliness increases way before the middle, ending in a very thoroughly bittering hoppiness governing the finish, releasing retronasal impressions of grapefruit peel, exotic peppers and pine resin, blending with the ’deaf’ spiciness of the rye. A very notable peppercorn-like ’sting’ appears after the sediment has been added, actually burning a bit as if chili peppers were added - I’m inclined to describe the end result as pepper-flavoured swamp water, especially when I am beginning to feel the physical presence of tiny hop ’granules’ on my lips (this is the stage when this beer starts to look like soup, see above). Bitter ending for sure, but not as harshly so as some of its American counterparts, still leaving a gap for juiciness and even a thin line of orange juice-like sweetness to go down while swallowing, soaked in a warming but not overly astringent, gin-like alcohol presence. Interesting DIPA, kicking off with deceptive candied orange-like sweetness but ending in a powerful ’new’ hop bitterness and warming alcohol - this is a style you either love or hate, but within its descriptive features, this one performs well. Feels almost ’moss green’ in its general make-up, an impression strongly reinforced by this monster’s final appearance of course, but also thanks to this dank, rainwater- and almost sweat-like aspect and the soggy rye bread-like features. More than decent West Coast DIPA-style beer in principle, but I would very strongly recommend to filter it (see great examples like Pliny the Elder), to lend it a cleaner flavor profile and visually more attractive appearance, because in the very end this was about the ’dirtiest’, filthiest and most abominable looking beer I have ever seen, I’d give it a plain 0/5 for appearance if I could. Otherwise no complaints.

Tap at beerlovers bar. Pours unclear amberblonde. Small white head, not very stable. Smell is very fruity. Oranges, grassy, I get notes that remind me of candy necklace. Taste is assetively bitter, huge amount of fruits, as well as marzepin. Not bad, but not my thing.

Draft - Big citrus and Grapefruit. Cloudy gold with a nice beige head. Fruity with some coconut notes and big bitterness.

0.33 l bottle from ’Sterk’, best before April 2018. Clear, dark amber with a thin, soapy, slowly diminishing, white head. Sweetish, moderately fruity, slightly herbal-grassy and a bit resiny aroma of mango, tobacco, orange jam and pine. Very sweet, malty, resiny, moderately fruity and slightly herbal-grassy taste of lots of pine, tobacco, orange jam, some coffee and hints of mango, followed by a medium long, sticky-sweet, also quite bitter, minimally boozy finish. Almost full-bodied, oily mouthfeel, almost flat. Very interesting, more like a hoppy Barley Wine than an IPA, really saturating, overall very enjoyable although fairly different from what I expected.
