Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.

This beer is hard to get compared to the Westmalle dubbel and tripel. The monks allegedly drink it as table beer, which is a fitting use of this brew.

Bottle shared at Borefts Basecamp, Utrecht - many thanks to Jan for trading me this one. Pours mostly clear yellow with a fine, white foam head. Dried out dough in the nose, moderate yeast, very subtle funky hay. Medium sweet flavor with more dry dough, straw, yeasty pale bread. Medium bodied with fine, creamy carbonation. Quite clean to finish with still more dried out dough character, some wheat, dry yeast, white bread. Quite drinkable. Nice. (Score 3.7, entry in July 2013.)
Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from All Good Beer I think. This is great stuff, quite smooth, pleasant wheat and biscuits, some grass, yeast, straw. Light bodied with delicate, massaging carbonation. Rounded finish. Highly drinkable. (Score: 3.9, rated June 2021.)

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Pale golden body with a light haze and a lasting white head. Lively carbonation. Patchy lacing. Aroma of yeast, straw, coriander and salted lemon. Flavour of white bread and lemony hops. Medium body with a frothy mouthfeel. Light fizz. A fantastic beer, so well executed.

33CL bottle at home, damn what an ordeal to get this beer, but itβs worth it, decent beer, clear golden beer with a white head, aroma is decent, taste is light bitter with a bit more bitterness at the end, good beer but there are better beers out there but I wouldnβt say no if I got the change to drink it again.

Bottle. Pours clear pale golden with airy but stable white head. Clear aroma of fruit and flowers with a distinct hoppy note. Bitter, subtle, hoppy flavour, giving way to a rich, flowery body, leaving a slightly bitter aftertaste. Yummy. The best BA I have tasted, I guess.

330 ml bottle bought @ Etre Gourmet. Pours clear pale golden with a big frothy and fizzy goldenish white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of trace on the glass. Smell is malty, spicy, phenolic and tiny estery with bread, crackers, lemon zest, dark grapes, white pepper corns, dry soil, cereal and hints of sheet metal. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter and spicy with crackers, white peppercorns, dark grapes, allspice, orange zest, dry soil, dry wood, hay, winegums, cereal and hints of metal. Mouthfeel is dry, crisp, slightly astringent and light bodied. Finish is bitter and spicy with crackers, black pepper, dry wood, orange zest, dry soil, allspice and hints of sheet metal. Nice but a tad bit too astringent.

0.33l bottle kindly provided by BelgBeerGeek. Not quite sure how old this bottle is, but it'definitely old! The pour on this one is near clear golden, and it has a massive everlasting and heavy fluffy just off-white head. It smells of honey, flowers, sweet dishwasher dispenser, thin red currants, some gooseberries and hints of old cellar. Quite nice, and you notice that it has a few years on its bottom this. The taste is heavy cellared and oxidized, but still quite drinkable. I get a light oily mouthfeel with a average carbonation level. The taste has a nice bitterness, lots of cellar tones, some clear wet cat and dry cardboard before it ends mild floral. Not a flavor bomb, but a damn interesting one to have tried. Thanks Vinc! 04.08.2012
