Westmalle Extra is the table beer served to the monks and their guests and is brewed with water, barley malt and hop cones. The Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel yeast is also used for this beer. Westmalle Extra is also top-fermented but it is considerably lighter, at 4.8%, alcohol-by-volume than its brother brews. It has the characteristic Westmalle aroma with hops coming through in the finish. It is a real thirst-quencher.
De goudblonde Extra wordt slechts tweemaal per jaar gebrouwen en is alleen bedoeld voor intern gebruik. Dit bier drinken de monniken en hun gasten immers enkel bij het middagmaal. Typisch voor de Extra is dat hij alleen met water, gerstemout en hopbellen wordt gebrouwen. Hij deelt zijn gist met de Dubbel en Tripel en is dus ook een bier van hoge gisting, al bevat hij maar 4,8% alcohol. Het aroma is typisch Westmalle en het hoppige karakter zorgt voor een dorstlessende droge afdronk.

Pours light yellow with a foamy head. Aroma of fruits, some malts, yeast and earthy notes. Taste is smooth and malty with some fruity and yeasty notes and hints of tartness. Malty and fruity finish with earthy notes. Nice, quite well balanced light Belgian ale.

Aroma has toffee typical to belgian ales, some orange peel and hints of citrus. Flavour is somewhat tart with citrus, some toffee and hints of orange peel. Quite different than the fresh bottle I had, but good still.

Bottle at ’t Antwaerps Bierhuiske. Pours hazy golden with a white head. Light fruity grainy aroma, maybe a little citrus. Flavour is medium swwet and bitter. A little watery, with a light to medium body and fairly soft carbonation.

Refrigerated 33 cl bottle at a JStax tasting poured into a trappist glass. Pours light golden with big bright white head. Nice lacing, light body, well carbonated, and estery/spicy aroma. Taste is estery spicy malt. Pretty good.

Special beer you can’t find from local shops. Light, a bit cloudy golden beer. Quite a lot foam. Light aroma, a bit fruity and grainy. Light taste with some bitter. A bit sloppy. Nothing special and as its difficult to get this beer, don’t bother. Erikoisuus, jota ei kaupoista saa.Vaalea, hieman samea kullankeltainen olut. Valkoista pienikuplaista vaahtoa aika reilusti. Haju hyvin mieto, hieman viljainen ja hedelmäinen. Maku aika kevyt, jonkun verran katkeruutta. Hieman vetisen oloinen, ei erikoinen.

12/03/2012 330ml bottle, via trade (thanks fonefan!). Dorata, lievemente torbida, schiuma abbondante, bianca e persistente. Al naso lieviti, spezie, malto, caramello, luppolo, molto armoniosa e bilanciata. In bocca ha un attacco maltato e un finale luppolato, ha corpo molto leggero, abbastanza "watery", e una buona carbonazione. Facile, armoniosa, ben fatta, si beve che è un piacere!
