Smooth and dark with caramel and burnt toffee flavours this Ale came from 18th Century London – there’s a good reason it’s alive and well today.

Tap at the Coldstream brewpub. Poured a slightly hazy dark brown colour with a mostly lasting frothy light tan head. The flavour is caramel malt, liqouirce, light charcoal. The flavour is liquorice bitter, with a charcoal, dry smoky ashtray palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation.

Draft. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt and bread. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt and bread, leading to a dry finish. The body is light.

Bottle. Pretty much black with a light tan head that’s soon less than a coat but lingers at the rim. Aroma is of caught caramel, more chicory than coffee, a little roasty. Fair bit of body for under 5%. Malty but with a decent spicy bitter finish that does get gradually overwhelmed. Just a little muddled with mocha, toffee and stewed fruit notes not quite combining for me. But it’s not bad.

Pours black with a quickly fading head.Nose shows milk chocolate, vegetable notes, cocoa and soft roasted malt. Good stuff, could lose the vegetabel notes though.Similar flavours, pretty much a milk porter, lots of residual sweetness amongst the soft roast and milk chocolate.
