Saison from a new microbrewery in Maldegem in the Meetjesland region northwest of Ghent, tasted at Maldegems Bierfestival. Egg-white, frothy, regular, mousy and stable head, hazy apricot blonde with ochre-golden hue. Aroma of sourdough, freshly cut red apple, pineapple, some DMS (overcooked cauliflower), wet cloth, raw potato, field flowers, soggy old bread. Crisp, fruity onset, sharply and very minerally carbonated even for the intended style, bit numbing; apple and pineapple aspects mingle with a doughy and cereally pale malt sweetishness edged by deep wheat sourishness, becoming more bready in the end with spicy phenolic notes and a floral, grassy hop bitterishness that lasts quite long. Unfortunately the DMS rises up again in the end, more or less ruining it for me. Started off nicely though, with a crisp, apple-like sourish aspect, quite refreshing; shows promise, but needs finetuning from a technical point of view.

As if in consultation, the 3 local brewers - or brewery clients - in and around Knesselare (NW of Flanders), made a special wheatbeer for this summer. All the more reason to compare them next to each other. So this rating is part of the Great Pan-Knesselare Wheatbeertasting. In order: Ierbius Schuum an je Neuze (Ierbius, Kleit), Run through a Field of Wheat (The Musketeers, Ursel), and Geirn Meugen Tarwe (Van Renterghem, Knesselare). One tip off the veil: the most remarkable feat turned out to be than none of the three had any sign of the classical wheatacidity... Very dense, very stable fine white head, fed by very lively carbonation in faintly hazy, yellow-golden beer. Wheat, citruspeel, coriander, spicy. Something vegetable as well. Sweet flavour, lots of restsugars, but also malt, grain, boiled potato - and some good hops in the finish, nettles, herbs, which saves the deal for me. Creamy MF; feels less carbonated than the visual impression. Light body. Aftertaste is bitterish to bitter, which spoils nothing. Let's start with the good things. Compared to their first "Bloend", this is a much more accomplished product, considering that as a rule I don't like witbier overmuch. It gives a better alternative for any of the major industry wits. OTOH, I still think they got a long way in front of them, and it is definitely the least of the three.
