Our original California Kölsch is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it's hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It's extremely drinkable, like a Kölsch should be. And complex, like a good craft beer demands.

A blonde ale with a thick lacing creamy white head. In aroma, a mineral malt with light German hops. In mouth, a crisp malt with grainy notes, mineral notes, a bit of grassy German hops, OK. Sampled at Bierkraft, Dec. 27 2011.

Despite the relatively low scores for this beer, I still find it very, very easy to put back on a hot afternoon. Quite English despite its California origins, Yellowtail Pale never offers either indulgent malts or juicy, over-the-top hops, and comes off pilsnerish in its finish. Still, a couple bottles on an 80 degree day are quite welcome.

this is a failure from ballast point on a few levels. the aroma doesnt match the flavor which is really strange. usually the nice deep sniff of a beer just after poured is a wonderful appetizer to the flavor. the flavor of this one is just what you’d expect from a west coast pale ale, hoppy-citrus and floral, which makes my palate start to water for the flavor in anticipation, so when the brew splashes over my tongue and the expectations fail, the dissapointment is that much greater, the flavor is bready, way more malty than the aroma would suggest, very little hops in the flavor, way way too carbonated. the flavor reminds me of a mid-level english bitter, good for sessions i guess, but not much for the interested beer drinker. too bad, this is a brewer that i usually rate pretty high, but this is just not good.

Bottle from GBBF 2010. Pale orange gold, thin white head. Some subtle citrus hop aroma. Not the worlds exciting pale ale. Bit thin on the malts and some hop. Satsuma flavour on the finish. Nothing entirely wrong with it, but it’s not great to be honest.

Bottle 12fl.oz.Clear medium orange yellow color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, light hay, moderate hoppy, citrus, peppery - anis seed. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100813]

Bottle, 12oz, thx to fonefan. A clear, golden beer with a decent off-white head. Resiny, grassy hops in the aroma, some pale malts and hay. The flavor is pretty much the same, a fine bitterness finishes it. Medium body. A decent one, but a bit boring for my likings. 100813
