There is one who foretells what is coming. How the future grows darker each day. That an ancient voice soon will be calling, and good folks will be caught in its sway.

For the soothsayer brews a magnificent ale, deep and black, through the blackest of arts. He predicts its pure notes, without secrets or spice, will tempt tongues, will turn heads, will steal hearts.

An arrival from San Angelo, TX by my daughter knowing I like the Belgian end of things. Taking the cage and cork from the 750 ml bottle I pour into my New Belgium globe glass. I find a very dark, just short of black, body topped by a healthy, persistent ivory tan head. The nose is swell, plum, cane sugar and bread. I take a taste. Mostly straightforward with a plum and grain opening going on with biscuit and more bitterness than expected. Thick in the mouth. Ommegang is one of my favorites as a brewery, this is just less than anticipated. But that is why we try them, is it not?

On tap at The Mint in Bethlehem, PA. Opaque dark brown with a brief tan head. Rich chocolate malt nose. Flavor is rich and silky roasted malt, cocoa and dark coffee. Bittersweet chocolate and cardamom notes in finish. Sip it slow and contemplate your soul patch.

Pours black into a tulip. Tan head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Prune and dark pit fruit aromas. Sweet with fig and prune upfront turning to dark caramel, and earth in the warm, lasting finish.

750ml. Like 15 bucks or something..errr...wut? Pretty solid Belgian Dark Ale. Big fruity notes, quite complex. Big and sugary, grounded with a deep Black Malt tone, but aggressive yeast tones and alcohol. Not unlike classic Trappist Ales, but maybe a little sugary and overbearing instead of sublime.

750 c&c from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours very dark brown with a huge, creamy tan head. Aroma of plummy dark fruits and treacle. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is plummy dark fruits, maybe some dates, medium dark malt. It’s not particularly hoppy, and certainly not dry. Very tasty tho. Almost as tasty as a plummy quad. Seems to have some spicy notes after awhile. Gets a bit earthy as well.

750, c&c, from Beverages 4 Less in Santee, CA. Fred’s ever on top of new releases. New to me anyway. Pours dark brown/black with a creamy/foamy tan head. Aroma is chocolate with some dark fruit and herbs. Maybe anise. Full bodied. Flavor is chocolate, cola, somewhat burnt malt, darker fruits, anise, yeast/spice - there’s a great lot of things in this. Finish starts with banana, ?, and goes on to be a spiced, herbed doppelbock kind of thing. Kudos to Moortgat for enabling Ommegang to make such great ales. Wonderful stuff.

Bottle: Poured a clear black color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar with light dry fruit notes is quite sublime. Taste is also a great mix of candi sugars with some dried fruits and a solid Belgian malt backbone. Body is full enough for style with great carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Some spices can also bed detected. Very solid offering and this is a beer I could have more regularly.

As Heart of Darkness @ Blind Tiger House. Yeah, I'd call this as good as black in the glass and the head is totally lacking here. Smells nice, but somewhat a bit low. A little bit of herbs and yeast are the fist thing that hits my nose. A little bit of sweet licorice also here. Like the aroma. It has a above average carbonation level and a light oily mouthfeel. The sweet licorice is really hanging in there in the taste also. Kinda earthy in a way and it has a little bit of some black/blue berries going on as well, notes of soft sweet figs before its leaving a mouthdrying finish in this one. Yeah, I like this! 18.06.2013

Draft. Pours black with minimal head. Aroma of burnt malt, oak and dark fruits. Taste is light bitter and light tart. Malty. Oak and dark fruits. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long warming finish. Overall, very good. Boozy with a bit of Belgian sugar.
