Before brewing our classic summer ale, we went to the certified organic farmer’s market to go shopping. The fresh basil is from Watanabe Farms in West Sacramento and the Honey is from Britt’s Honey, two California artisanal producers. This brew is subtle and refreshing. Starting in 2012, Honey Basil Ale will be a year round offering in 4 packs.

Bottle. Pours with a clear, yet surprisingly dark golden amber body with a lasting white head that leaves decent lace. Aromas are floral, with a really nice basil character. Light earthy notes, citrus zest, bready malts, floral honey. A complaint: it smells a bit too sweet and caramel heavy. Flavors are bready, caramel, earthy, hay, some sweet bready character. Medium floral and earthy basil notes keep a refreshing edge. Some spice. I feel that this is a bit too sweet to really perfect the concept as the caramel weighs down the delicate basil. More crispness would be nice. Still solid. A honey like floral note with a bit of herbal-chamomile which I assume is honey or basil. Lively bubbles, medium bodied, well hidden alcohol with a floral finish. Somewhat sessionable. Nothing off, but I wish it were a touch drier.

Tea, apple, honey, and herbal nose. Clear copper, medium pale yellow head. Flavor is amber ale based, dried leaves, tea, and basil, prestty exciting for an amber, which tend to bore me. Tea finish. This probably isn’t rated highly, but it isn’t bad. In fact, it is very unique and quite enjoyable. I wouldn’t drink it all the time, but I think it will pair excellently with certain dishes, particularly pork tenderloin.

12oz Bottle pours out a copper/amber topped with almost no head. Aroma was light pepper, basil, rich malts, and some sweetness. Taste was more of the basil leading the way along with some spice, light sweetness and a little something on the end that sticks around.

A murky reddish copper ale with virtually no head. A herbal malt aroma with light basil and smooth honey notes. In mouth, a rather bland and watery herbal malt, not much basil, dryish honey, boring. Bottle at Datz, May 24 2010.

On draft out of a pint glass. Pours a clear, golden-orange with a billowy off-white head. Aromas of basil are muted with nice yeast scent. Full well-rounded mouthfeel with good cabonation but minimal yeast and some viscosity. Flavor really comes thru on the mid-palate. Nice basil finish and subtle balance of malt and hops.

Bottle on 11/09/2009 from Whole Foods - Short Pump. Slightly hazy orange amber body with a medium frothy off-white head. Sweet caramel, basil and honey aroma. Sweet caramel and basil flavor with faint honey notes. Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

12oz bottle pours clear deep copper with thin off white head. The aroma is pretty much honey, basil and maybe some floral hops. The taste starts sweet with floral notes and bold honey sweetness and only growing to midway. The basil sort of starts mild and becomes nearly robust midway and into the finish. Interesting but a bit sweet. In fact the sweetness seems to prevent this beer from really being refreshing. Deep in the after taste I seem to get a bit of grainy malts for some reason.

Bottle. Pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet with a honey aroma with a subtle basil undertone. Flavor is sweet with honey and notes of malts and a bit of citrus on the finish. Not much basil present on the tongue.

bottle Pours light copper, white head. Aroma had more basil notes than the honey. Some herbal notes/spices that come sout as real present. Flavor, on this side, the honey was more present compared to the basil. Herbal and malty. Crisp, honey sweet finish with light caramel and thin citrus bitterness.
