Kloster is our version of a Belgian abbey ale. Dark as an abbey’s cellar. Complex aroma with characteristic sweetness and convincing strength. A beer to experience!

This entry is for the filtered 7% Kloster, that was produced until 2005. The 9% version (that used to be called Julkloster until 2005) should be rated under Kloster 2005-.

330ml Bottle (Thanks Omhper) - 2002 vintage. Dark brown with some red tinges. Leather, dried fruit, marzipan and caramel in the aroma. Fruity, malty and tangy taste with notes of spicy fruitcake, dates, prunes and almonds. A decade old, but it’s still in good condition and has held up well.

Sample @ SMÖF 2012. 2001 vintage. Pours hazy brownish ruby with a small bubbly offwhite head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with sweet dark bread, leather, prunes, raisins, lemon zest, dusty dry soil, moist wood, port wine, toffee, caramel and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, malty, tiny sour and slightly fruity with sweet dark bread, prunes, raisins, leather, hay, moist wood, red wine, caramel, black wine gums, moist soil and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is round, tiny fruity tart, soft and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet and tiny fruity sour with prunes, raisins, dates, sweet dark bread, toffee, port wine, moist wood and leather. Very oxidized but has aged well.

2001. Slightly hazy brown with a small off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, toffee, dried fruit and a bit of dust. Sweetish malty flavour with caramel, toffee, fruit and spice. Clearly old and oxidized, but still a rather interesting beer

Bottle, vintage 2001 at Slottskällans Bryggeri in Uppsala, March 2011. (Also tried vintage 2005 and 2008 at the same occasion.) Nice dark brown color with no head. Very vinous aroma with dried fruit, raisin, caramel, chocolate. Sweet taste with medium carbonation and a nice body. Great beer to enjoy together with some cheese. Pity that I do not have any bottles at home. This beer had aged very well.

(Bottle, 1998 vintage, at Tégners Gömställe, Stockholm) I have tasted this beed a long ago but at that time I didn’t take any notes so I cannot recall what it was like back then. The beer poured dark brown and clear. There was no head formation. Aroma was very pleasant. I found raisins, dried plum and treacle. Palate was very dry and full bodied with medium carbonation. The taste had perhaps lost its prime: it was quite earth-like. I found malts, rasin, very little sweetness, earth, cellar and molasses. Despite what had happened to the taste I have to admit the beer had aged well. No way this was a disappointment.

330ml bottle, vintage 1998, from the cellar at Tegners Gömställe. Dark, amber body with a shinning, naked surface. Aroma of dried and dark fruits, including figs and apricot. Tolerable sweet malts in flavour joined by sweet prunes, almost like prune compote, with underlying bitter, dark fruits. Velvet smooth on the swallow. Vinous textured. Just harmonious and delicious (Stockholm, 03.09.2009).
