Kloster is our version of a Belgian abbey ale. Dark as an abbey’s cellar. Complex aroma with characteristic sweetness and convincing strength. A beer to experience!

This entry is for the filtered 7% Kloster, that was produced until 2005. The 9% version (that used to be called Julkloster until 2005) should be rated under Kloster 2005-.

33 cl bottle thanks to omhper, vitage 2002. BB 030911. Hazy mahogany color, small tan head. Alcohol, wood, chocolate scent with a fresh minty note. Nettles, a bit sour, acidic, vinous, thin taste. Niettle and wood aftertaste. Thin mouthfeel, low bitterness. Too old or something wrong with it.

Bottled (2002 vintage, thanks omhper!). Dark brown colour with small brown bubbly head. Aroma is malts, with caramel, nuts and some alcohol. Also some slight not-too-sweet Madeiranotes. Flavour is big bready malts balanced up with caramel, raisins and alcohol. Aftertaste has some signs of roastyness and dark dry fruits. Ages well. Rich tonguetickling carbonation.

Draught
Nut brown, hazy, no head. Yeast, sahti-like aroma. Juniper-like flavor, very sahti-like, a bit sweet, dry aftertaste. The closest to sahti you can get in Sweden and really one. I wonder what they’ve done with this patch however.(7/3/8/4/15 3.7)
Bottle at SBWF 2009. Vintage 1999.
Dark ruby-amber color, tiny off-white head. Slightly oxidazed, madeira/portwine, caramel and vanilla in the nose. Very liquerish palate. Alcohol, prunes, some madeira in the flavor. Aged very nicely. (7/4/7/4/15 3.7)

(Bottle 33 cl) A very noisy beer, lots of fizz here. The CO2 vanishes rather quickly though. Dark brown and unclear, rather small head. Spicy nose reminding me of a port. Extremely complex aroma reminding me of a strong Belgian Trappist. All the usual notes of dates, chocolate rounded with some dry aroma hops. Very well crafted. 160402

Very dark red-brown; yellowish head, very fast gone. Rich fruity nose, orangepeel, vinous, brown candy sugar. Woody taste, liquorice, vinous, sweet. There’s quite some caramel in this sweetness. After some time, spices enter: again, I guess, orangepeel, as well as a very earthy flavour. Well bodied, less attenuated than most doubles. A bit sweet, really, very much in the Scandinavian Jul-Ol pattern. These Vikings love their glögg too much.

Bottle, best before 3.7.04 Fresh citric (orangepeel and lemon), spicy and raisiny aroma. Chestnut color, many champagne bubbles, low amber creamy head. A very fresh and refreshing dubbel: Citric and floral notes in contrast to the heavier raisin, plum and wooden cognac notes. Relatively light body, spakly mouthfeel. Brilliant! A dubbel for the summer heat, I like it.

Unfiltered. Brown-amber color; thin cap; a very thin perlage. Fizzy banana aroma, fresh and unusual; caramel and strawberry. Smooth sensation, but thin character, with a not too sweet malt, caramel; just the necessary hop. The body is too simple; pleasant but too easy Dubbel.
