An amber beer with a disappearing white head. The aroma contains hops, malt, and some alcohol. The flavor contains a lot of alcohol, but also malt, fruit, and spices while the body is strong.

Old salty. Come on now, try to come up with something that at least sounds appetizing. My mind swims with thoughts of vile excreta whenever I come across this name. A factor that has kept me from trying this beer until now. +++ The salt comes in 12 oz brown bottle. The pour is an opaque red-brown color with a minimal tan head. The scent is orange and sweet malt. The flavor is sharp and sweet with a flavor of nectarine. Overall a very smooth drinking barleywine. Good but not truly noteworthy in what has become a crowded field. But good god get a better name.

2004 Vintage:
Dark copper colour with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of oak, nuts and toffee. Light bodied and very mild for the taste. Sweet flavours roam the palate with very little else. Overall, a decent beer - very calming and not harsh at all. This beer was sampled after 3 years on the shelf. I would have enjoyed this sooner, if I was looking for the ’optimal time’. Rating for this sample: 7,3,7,3,13 2002 Vintage:
Dark copper colour with slight ruby highlights and a thin tan head. Aroma of alcohol, raisins, graham crackers and cardboard. Full-bodied; Sweet taste of caster sugar & raisins with plentifual. malt and some mild flavours. Aftertaste clean, especially for the style. Peach taste in the end...very nice after 1.5 years! A definate try if you can find this around :-). The beer was very subtle and aged extremely well...as I tasted about 1 or 2 % ABV, but found out that it was 11%! I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Chevy Chase Wine & Liquor in Washington, D.C. and sampled it on 20-December-2003. Rating for this sample: 7,5,9,5,17

(2002 bottling)Thick creamy head with pinkish shine. Dark amber beer. Nose is nuttey, estery, sherry, dried fruits. Taste gives bitter almonds, brown bread, some brown sugar, maybe some raisins. fully bodied. Alcohol-impregnated driven load of spice-marinated gingerbread, somehow reverted to a liquid state. WOW.

2002. Nice ruby color, but it smells like play doh. No carbonation. The taste is VERY malty, and slighty sweet and tart. A decent barley wine, but the smell really kills it for me. - this vintage, 3.3 2003 - considerable better this year - marked absence of that play doh smell and taste - sweetness kicked down a notch - some spice added, most notably cinnamon - brown sugar and a hop kick at the end - great vintage - I will certainly cellar.

Re rate a few years later with a 2005 bottle in 2008, courtesy dchmela. Plummy alcoholic nose. A little sweatsock. Sweet and fruity with a big round finish. Brownish light color.

Interesting packaging with a wax sealed crown. When I peeled the wax off - there was a brownish sticky material around the rim of the cap - leading me to think that one reason for the wax seals was that the crown seals were imperfect, resulting in some leakage (further confirmation was found when I popped the cap and discovered it was a twist off...on a bottle-conditioned barleywine??). Anyway, the beer was dark brown and cloudy, with a strong smell of date like maltiness and some hint at hops. Flavor was rather harsh, with a stinging hoppiness. I was only able to drink a little more than half of it.
