Wiglaf conforms perfectly to the heroic code in that he is willing to die attempting to defeat the opponent and, more importantly, to save his lord – whilst our Wiglaf is an English Pale Ale that begins dryly before developing a lemony, hoppy sweetness.

Cask pint in The Cock Hotel, Wellington Shropshire on 24th Feb 2017. Clean amber pour, white head with lacing. Do not know if the recipe has changed, but this was caramel heavy in both the aroma and taste, toffee esters in the nose too. Not as sweet as the aroma indicated but still very malty and semi-sweet in nature. Hops try to balance out the malty molasses, but do not quite make it. My sweet tooth loved it.

On tap, pours light amber. Aroma and flavour of bitter hops, balanced by English caramel malts and woody characteristics. Not terrible.

Clear, pale-foxy. Slight head, dissipating. Nose with caramel, sweets, glimpse of hops. Taste caramel again, just fleeting hops with no discernible quality or aroma. Light to medium bodied, absolutely no carbonation. Oh well.
