The blond, low-alcohol beer is based upon a slightly smoked 'Saison'. For over a year the beer softly ripened and soured in oak barrels together with passion fruit. The pleasant sourness is when drinking rounded off by a gentle bitterness, partly created by the refined smoky touch. The name is kind of an homage to a dear friend of the Vermeersch family, the monk Father Harry. This religious man was for a large part of his life ‘the boss’ of a monastic order, the ‘Passionate Brothers’! The pun on passionfruit is an extra.

Bottle from a local bottle shop. Aroma is abundant passionfruit with remarkably strong bready grainy malt, wheat, some straw. Tart tropical fruits, some mango. Flavour is medium sour, mildly puckering. Medium body. Another fine Sour from De Leite.

Will probably not like this, but oh well... Bought by mistake. Smell-weak, faint sour tones, faint yeast, citrus. Foam- thin, some sour notes, some faint citrus and more sourness... Head is small, and white in color. Sticks. Appearance- brewer bottle cap, simple label. From - pint Taste- sourness, faint citrus and then more sourness. Sour beers just taste off for me. I cant drink this, why I buy them? Poured out.

Dark yellow colour with quick fading head. Aroma has passion fruit and also some hay and vanilla. Really nice balance of fruity tangy sharpness with the drier elements and tannin of the barrel. Decent body too. Superb considering it's only 4.5%.

Nett. 10/9/10/9/7/9

Sour ale with passionfruit, brewed with oats and rice (!), from De Leite, the originally quite traditional West-Flemish brewery that gained considerable momentum when they discovered sour ales were their true strength. Thick and mousy, frothy, snow white, slowly breaking but generally very stable head, cloudy apricot blonde robe with warm orangey glow. Bright and elegant bouquet of indeed a lot of actual passionfruit (maracuja), lots of oak-produced 'vanilla', yellow kiwi, gooseberries, strawberry wine, freshly cut raw rhubarb, moist wood, cider, unripe peach, mandarin, white wine, minerals, lemon zest. Spritzy, fruity onset, dominated by aromatic, sweet and sour passionfruit as expected, hints of kiwi, pineapple and white grape too, fizzy and minerally carbonation, supple but relatively 'full' body. A (typically Leite) thin and gentle, but refreshingly citric lactic sourness runs through a lean, supple white-bready maltiness with a sweetish, probably rice-induced edge to it as well as 'velvety' oats, carrying the passionfruit to a bright, tropically-tinged, very fruity finish adorned with retronasal vanilla from the oak, a light-footed tannic woodiness adding some dryness and complexity and very light bready yeasty notes here and there. Soaked in tropical, summery passionfruit, this is as good as De Leite gets for me: perfectly finetuned, gracious, brightly summery and refreshing as well as sufficiently complex, and completely free of any of the off-flavours described in some of the ratings below. De Leite sure knows its sours and this internationally coloured 'elaboration' on the basic theme frankly came very unexpected to me. Very well done.
