Buddel: Hazy, deep chestnut-amber coloured, big stable and lacy off-white head; liquorice, toasted malt and dried berries in the nose, distinctive herbal hops in the background; solid sweet-bitter flavour, medium bodied and soft; lingering bitter-malty and fruity finish. Very Stout-like brew, very good…

Bottle at De Paas. Smells like cellar mold and tastes like a smoky hangover. Roasted, caramels, heavy bitter hops. Backlog from 2014/10/07.

Poured from a bottle courtesy of my Summer Secret Santa. Aroma is moderately malty with a lot of toasted bread and cracker with lighter caramel and toffee. Some medium light raisin notes. Moderately strong hop aromas with a lot of grapefruit and woodsy, resin notes. A hint of alcohol. Pours a murky, dark brown with a touch of a red hue and a medium large, thick, dark tan head. Moderate lacing with medium length legs. Flavor is slightly sweet with a bit more sweetness mid palate. Moderate toasted bread and cracker malt notes with lighter caramel and raisin. Medium high to high bitterness with a bit of alcohol spice. Moderate hop notes, mostly woody but also some light grapefruit and pine resin. A bit of a floral character. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a decent IPA though I don’t think it is really a black IPA so much as a brown one. Hops are very European, but I think that works with the darker malt notes.
