18th Oct 2017: 1st brew in a Dark Beer Tasting session, on-line but sharing with no one! 500ml bottle, BB Jul 2018. Poured into an Abbot Ale badged glass tankard, my preferred tasting glass for darker beers. Looks good, dark brown with a full and deep tanned blanket of foam on top. Malty nose with toffee esters coming through, some smouldering 'peat bog' smokiness too. Not really a smoky beer bloke, so I am thinking the Marston's version was more to my liking. Nothing wrong with this, but the warmer the beer gets the more smokiness I get in the flavour and aroma. Had to get some Ham to help me finish the last half-pint of it. Scored objectively.

Bottle at home, 16/09/17. Rich mahogany brown with a well appointed tan covering. Nose is toffee, light spice, brown bread, cocoa sprinkle. Taste comprises chocolate biscuit, toasted brown sugars, light fruit loaf, raisins, toffee, hint of liquorice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with balanced roasted flavours. Decent enough porter ... for the price point pretty good.
