In 2013 Mike Hinkley, Green Flash co-founder, turned to the friends at St-Feuillien and proposed to work together in our efforts to get fresh West Coast IPA to market in Europe. Dominique Friart and her team agreed to allow Chuck Silva, Green Flash brewmaster, to physically brew West Coast IPA using the state-of-the-art equipment at their new facility in Le Roeulx, Belgium.

The recipe for Green Flash West Coast IPA in Belgium is as close a replica to the U.S. version of the beer as possible - the ingredients include the same hops, malts and the Green Flash house yeast. Each are produced using the same complex brewing process. The only difference is that the West Coast IPA produced in Belgium is bottle-conditioned to protect beer quality in areas of Europe where unrefrigerated conditions may be unavoidable.

0.355l bottle. Orange/amber body, beige head. Aroma of bread, biscuit, caramel, tropical fruits and pine. Taste of toast, caramel, pine and citruses. Very dry, light-medium bodied beer. It’s also really bitter but very nice.

0,33L bottle (from Stockmann), BB 30.03.2017. Pours amber with beige head. The head stays. Aroma is very weak sweetness, alcohol, malt, and citrus. Flavor is sweet and bitter, caramel, malt, pine, some citrus, touch of alcohol. Finish is long resin bitter. Overall: very disappointing brew. The long bitter finish is the only nice part of this brew. --- Beer merged from original tick of West Coast IPA (Brewed at St. Feuillien) on 06 Feb 2019 at 11:03. Original review text: bl

Fluffy to whipped eggwhite head over hazy orange-golden beer. Rainwater, sweet fruit and sweet citrus, bit catty. Toasted malts, liquourice, faint hoppy bitterness, growing into the finish and becoming vegetable-like (Belgian endives). Creamy head, but beer is well-carbonated, hence lightler and lively. Medium bodied. Not very WestCoast, IMO.

Bottle, 330 ml from Za Popen’t. courtesy of and shared with Kova. Pours golden with white head. Pine and citrus hoppy. Sweetish. Yeasty and bit spicy, didn’t expect that. Not bad but original was much better.

Amber clear color, good cloudy head, lace. Sweetish, candy fruity aroma. Medium-bodied. Clean mouthfeel. Malty, sweet fruity with some resiny bitterness. Much more simple and sweetish than the original.

Hazy orange color with big white head. Very resinous aroma, a bit citrus and caramel. Taste is nice, fruity, resinous. Smooth carbonation. Okay, but a bit underwhelming. Let’s see how the American version is, which I’ll hopefully find on my next trip to California.
