330 ml. bottle sampled @ ‘t Antwaerps Bierhuiske. A basic RIS offering that is very heavy on umami & liquorish flavours which is available on massive scale in the USA from what I have gathered. It is in the top 50 most rated beers on RB. It lacks any real chocolate for me but I do believe that chocolate isn’t an actual ingredient & the term here is more about the power of suggestion than anything else. Appearance is usual pitch black, pure black chocolate let us say for poetic sense, dark brown mocha head that quickly largely vanishes. Banished to only the sides of the glass. Nose is thick boozy, soy sauce, huge umami profile with lots of thick and bitter liquorish flavor’s,… Bitter umami, soy sauce, black liquorish, fish guts all heavy dominated the profile for me,… Medium bodied for the style. The longer I am vegan the more appear to develop a dislike for this kind of heavy umami & black liquorish profile in stouts. Unfortunately this just isn’t for me but that is strictly personal.

Re-rate from 2015: Bottles from Signal Variety, Plaistow, NH 2015; Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine (2019) into tulip glass. Aroma is chocolate with dark fruit and alcohol. Appearance is opaque black with finger-width light brown head with decent retention and no lacing. Taste is chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt, anise, milder earthy/cardboard and light yeast. Palate is medium bodied, thick texture with average carbonation, subtle alcohol warmth and nice, long finish dominated by mild bitter and yeast. Overall, after 4 years, I still really like it!

Svart med høyt lys brunt skum. Lukter mørk sjokolade og kaffe. Bittersøt kakao, espresso, mørk sjokolade og noe mørke frukter. Kort bitter avslutning. Lite kullsyre.

2016 re-rate: Tap at CYO. Tons of dark cacao nib and coffee. Endless espresso and chocolate notes. Bitter finish that lingers. Very nice. Old rating. 12oz bottle from old town. Jet black with tan head. Big burnt coffee aromas with milk chocolate, dark fruit and toasted grain. Taste is similar with bitterness standing out. Slight chocolately sweetness in there as well. Starts to get boozy as it warms up. Nice bitter finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Black Chocolate Stout on 20 Nov 2016 at 01:26 - Score: 8. Bottle from beer gonzo, Coventry. Deep black colour with no real head. Aroma has chocolate roasted malts. Taste sweet. Maybe too sweet. Ok, but not wow.

355ml bottle. Poured inky black with a fizzy head that quickly disappeared and left things quite flat. Chocolate aroma, taste was coffee, chocolate and alcohol. Good, but not quite as good as I was expecting

On draught at Harry’s in Bermuda. Alcohol and chocolate dominate the nose. Black with brown head that quickly dissipates. Leaves nice lacing down the glass. Taste is mostly alcohol with cocoa nibs and bittersweet chocolate. Moderate bitterness and chalky aspects on finish. Lacking complexity for the style as it is really just chocolate and alcohol.

Pours with light foam from the bottle. First impression on the nose shows egg whites. Upon letting it breathe a bit, the nose shows dark chocolate, roasted malts, and a few notes of soy sauce. The palate is big and thick. The first sensation is mostly the carbonation, but the dark chocolate bitter notes show up very quickly. As the beer suggests, there’s a lot of dark chocolate flavor in here. Not terribly intense or concentrated (i.e. w00tstout) but it’s there and a great beer to drink down. But really comes into its own when you let it warm up. Best enjoyed at or only slightly cooler than room temperature
