[12oz bottle from Total Wines, Brea, CA.] A straw coloured pour with a billowing white head and lacking the fine carbonation usually associated with Brut IPAs; fruity yeast aroma; dry in the mouth with a predominantly yeasty taste; and a herbal bitterness, with obvious alcohol to finish. A rather poor example of the style.

Draft. Clear pale gold body. Fizzy white head. Aroma of toasted grain, light fruit, hay, plastic. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/texture, lively carbonation. Fizzy in the mouth. Dry but not as dry as other bruts. Convoluted.

Pours pale Golden with a fluffy white head. Aroma of flat, dry aroma. Taste is dry and harsh, similar to that of a dry white. Palate includes white wine and a prune note. Nice.

Bottle pour into nonic pint glass from Total Wine & More, Burlington. Appearance is orange-yellow with greenish tinge (urine-like) with attractive, steady sparkle, finger-width foamy white head with fair retention and nice sudsy lacing. Aroma is dry, champagne yeast and tart fruit, mild spice. Taste is tart fruit, 2nd half earthy, European hop bitterness and dry cracker yeast. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, average-to-lively carbonation and dry, yeasty-bitter finish. Overall, not feeling the love for how this comes together. Tart, dry, yeasty, bitter.

Bottle from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours pale, bright gold with a creamy head. Aroma is dry, tho a slight touch of breadiness is present - there's fruit that might be green melon. Med body or nearly. Flavor is dry with green melon notes and barely discernible pale malt. There's a pleasant bit - possibly from both carbonation and hops. I'm tempted to say gooseberry, but that couldn't be right? Quite pleasing, and arguably underrated - possibly because it's not a standard IPA.

I cannot say this is a combination I would have come up with. But I do like champagne and certainly do appreciate beer. Let's take the plunge. I got a lonely 12 oz bottle out of the six-pack mixer selection at the nearest supermarket. Going into a standard bar glass with a handle it shows up a quite light yellow with a strong top of small, white bubbles reinvigorated by a phenomenal amount of carbonation. Whew! I got all that out. The smell, certainly IPAish with some herbal notes. The taste is much as expected, some lemon, a bit of pininess, little of a wine effect but maybe it's me. Slightly astringent and a firm bitterness completing. And now I know.
