Keg at Hopcat Madison, 8/15/16. Dark brown, large creamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, mild citrus. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, piney hops Thin-medium bodied, well balanced.

On tap at Spacebar pours a muddy, dark brown/black with some swirling, white head. Nose has plenty of toasted bread, malt, some burnt coffee bean, hops are more piney and herbal than citrus, some earthy soil lurking too. Flavor follows right along, toast, chewy grains, a little pepper, some molasses, pine, soap, dried herbs. Full bodied but mostly dry on the finish. Solid for the style.

Bottle shared. Thanks Gregg! Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of beige foam. Big deep, roasted malt nose with cacao nib and coffee as it warms. Body is well-balanced with some espresso notes on the palate. Nice bitter finish, but probably more roasty than hoppy. Pours dark brown, little beige foam. Roasty aroma, full of herbal hops. Demonstrates a nice balance between roast bitterness and bitterness coming from the hops. Something from green vegetables also going on here. Overall absolutely beautiful and drinkable by pints. Some hot tingle in the aftertaste, peppery dry finish. Drinks much smoother than its 8,5% would suggest, if you said it was 5,5%, I could believe you.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 7/5/2016. Pours pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense dark tan head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, light smoke/char, floral, grass, and roasted earthiness. Moderate pine/citrus peel and roast/char bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange peel, pine, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toasted dark bread, and floral/roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero astringent hop/roast flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from hop/roast bitterness as well. medium carbonation and medium-plus body; wit ha very smooth, moderately sticky/resinous, creamy/bready, and lightly chalky balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Black DIPA! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/pine hops and roast/bready malt flavors; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. A really enjoyable offering.
