Here at BrewDog, we love the hidden tracks; the unexpected discoveries. The B-Sides.
Take our 10HL pilot kit. It is the place our brewers let those imaginations fly and lay down unpredictable, creative tracks. Our brew team use it to dial in our small-scale experimental brews, each then finding its way to our bars as a draught-only special release.
However, we felt the naming convention used previously – Pilot Brew XXX – didn't fully reflected the ingenuity displayed by our brewers. To depict this a little better we now release each pilot brew as a bona fide B-Side; alongside our production-batch launches that take place at our bars, you’ll be able to discover a flip side in the form of one of our B-Side releases.

330ml bottle [as "Prototype - Black IPA">. Opaque, darkest brown colour with ruby red glimmer and average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting and lacing, beige head. Roasty, chocolately dark malty aroma with grassy and herbal hoppy overtones, green onion, a touch of grapefruit. Taste is roasty dark malty, slightly smoky, hints of "Mettwurst", some dark chocolate, some leafy hop bitterness with mineral and chalky touch; settles down at orange flavoured chocolate. Light and almost a bit watery; surprising smoky touch saves from slight disappointment.

330 ml bottle at home, as Prototype Black IPA. Dark brown to black color with beige head. Hoppy aroma and light roasted malty, pine, grassy, light fruity. Sweet and biter like aroma, with more malty notes than the aroma. Light to medium oily body with soft carbonation

A dark almost black colour with a small beige head. This has a very fruity aroma, tropical fruit, citrus and pine being dominant. Has a fruity hoppy flavour, quite sweet taste, some pine and quickly into a dry bitter finish.

Bottle shared by Lukka19, thanks. Aroma clean Simcoe fruity vinous gooseberry hoppiness. Very dark clear colour. Also nice clean hoppiness in flavour which is unusual in CDAs. It eventually transforms to the standard grass and then bold roastiness appears. Not your traditional CDA but this is how I think they should be made.

On tap (as "BrewDog Session Black IPA" 5,3%) at BD57, Oslo. Very dark, close to black, with a modest, beige head. Lovely hoppy smell followed by some dark, roasty notes, hints of licorice and dark fruits. Moderate sweet with lovely hoppy flavours, fruits, pine and roasted malt. Nice and balanced bitterness. Tasty and sessionable!

Nice tasty and easy drinkable bipa.
Black color with a fine tan head. Good lacing on the sides of the glass. Good intensity in the aroma with some strange perfumed notes. Medium body and a soft carbonation. Ok balance between sweetness and bitterness. Chocolate, mild roasted, grapefruit hoppy, mild fruity and some strange herbal notes.
[On tap at BrewDog Grünerløkka (BD57) in Oslo, Norway]

On tap at BrewDog Shepherds Bush, black beer lasting tan head. some hop on the aroma. A little burnt chocolate in the mouth. A little meaty even. OK not my favourite style and not my favourite version. Move along.

Aromas of lemon and coffee are overwhelmed by sarsparilla. The palate is slightly thin, with notes of grapefruit, nuts and a little chocolate predominant. Enjoyable, but not a classic.
