500ml swing top - hazy light amber - thick, soapy lace - nose of cookie dough, dried cherries, raisin, brown sugar, fig - pretty pleasant, really - the flavor is not nearly as enjoyable - strongly present alcohol - malt character is kind of stale - texture is a little thin - some caramelized sugars, raisin, nuts - boozy finish - was hoping for more.

Bottle at Hackerhaus Munich. Clear brown beer. Complex nutty malt aroma you can smell the strength. Strong abv flavour. Some heat some sting on the finish. It doesn’t mess around. Malt bread aroma. It has some toffee in the flavour. Long slow post lunch drink. Yes the peppery finish and solid shiny malts are good.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear orange amber, thin white head. Aromas of honey, light herbal hops, light metallic note. Taste is sweet, fruit cake, warming booze. Oily texture, sweet finish.

500 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 6/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy deep ruby red/copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of raisin, plum, fig, apple, caramel, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate, herbal, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and solid balance of dark/bready malt and fruity yeast notes; with good strength. A bit too much fruity/ester notes in the aromas. Taste of big caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light nuttiness, light chocolate, plum, fig, herbal, and yeast /toasted earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, plum, fig, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice robustness, complexity, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a small warming lingering after the finish. Overall this is a very nice doppelbock style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of dark/bready malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

500ml bottle. Kind of odd amber-orange color. Soda like fast dissipating head. Deep burnt caramel, not very appealing. I get the feeling they make crap one-offs just to sell to the US. Sweet, has some malt depth, but just doesn’t come off as natural to me, sort of a factory feel, thinnish in ways you’d hope it wasn’t. Suppose this one wasn’t that shelf stable. Not that impressive of an offering, but I still enjoy the style, so it works for me on some levels.

500mL flip top; beer #4 in a doppelbock blind tasting.

I guess this was my biggest disappointment of the tasting. When I purchased it I was hoping this would be something tasty but instead I got something that tasted like a stale malt rich lager. There was an off flavor character of vomit on the nose but not the flavor.

Bottle, pours a clear darker orange with a small beige head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, a touch of smoky wood, and some light fruitiness. Flavour reveals notes of dark fruits, toasted malt, and a little toffee. Well-balanced, with a good amount of sweetness. Solid stuff.

Started a bit to early on this. To cold. It was actually a bit unpleasant when it was to cold. Changed definitely to the better at right temperature. Clear amber color with a fine off white head. Good lacing. Looks nice this one. Lovely fruity, bready, nutty and malty aroma. Thick nice body. Tad sweet and a moderate bitterness. Smooth fruity, toffee, nutty and malty flavor. Really nice and tasty doppelbock.
