While always seasonal and warming, our winter beer is different each year. For 2017 we have brewed a Belgian Abbey style beer – a Dubbel. We added chocolate malt and cacao shells for that scrumptious double chocolate taste alongside some fresh orange zest and winter spices.

Bottle from Appellation Wines. Appearance - dark brown and cola like. Fluffy fawn head. Nose - creamy orange and chocolate. Light biscuit spice. Taste - cocoa nibs coming through. Then orange followed in by a sweet caramel note. The orange returns in a sort of marmalade form. Palate - medium bodied and creamy. A touch sweet on the finish. Overall - complex but a touch on the sweet side.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Dark brown body with a thin beige head that gradually fades. Faint lacing. Aroma of cinnamon, milk chocolate, ginger and star anise. Flavour of tangy orange zest, yeast and warming spices. Medium body with a powdery mouthfeel. Soft fizz. A touch sharper than my favourite Dubbels, but I enjoyed it.
