Crystal malt, amber malt, black malt and roast barley in generous quantities generate a deep black colour and flavours to match. Roast bitterness, coffee and liquorice notes combine in a velvety rich malt texture. A full and sweetish body is balanced by traditional Goldings hops.

Bottle at home, from Cotteridge Wines, 03/09/13. Pitch black with a good size tan covering that begins to thin after a few minutes. Nose is dark fruits, toffee fudge, dates, light Belgian yeast aroma, brown sugars, fruit loaf. Taste comprises dark fruits, dates, stewed raisens, liqourice, molasses, chocolate, tar, leather, figs. Full bodied, fine carbonation, slightly warming alcohol in the finish. Decent enough impy although I prefer the less full on dark fruit variety, however this one grew on me as I sipped it and more flavours came out as it warmed. Nice!

50cl courtesy of sebletitje. It pours with a dark mahogany body that supports a tan head of foam. The mild aroma offers up earthy roasty tobacco, chocolate and roasted malts. The taste delivers roasted malts, a thin ribbon of black strap molasses and then chocolate. This tastes pretty darn smooth with earthy tobacco and with some mineral water notes showing up in the finish. Cool stuff.

Bottle, thanks to Leighton. Slow gusher.... It pours near black with a small tan head. The nose is roasted malt, cocoa, toasted coconut, vanilla, fudge and Scottish tablet. The taste is roasted malt, spice, alcohol, dark fruit, cocoa, liquorice, earth and some caramel/toffee/fudge action. Full body and pretty high on the carbonation. Flavoursome and well-balanced. Rather tasty.

Bottle at Bruce’s, London. One of my contributions. A mild gusher. Pours oily black-brown with a fine, receding tan head. Some good dark fruits in the nose, a bit of dark chocolate. Medium to big sweet flavor, dry dark chocolate, moderate roast, some alcohol punch, brownies, dark fruits, dates, light burnt earth bitterness. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming to finish, sweet dark malts, rich chocolate, mild roast, dark fruits, cherries. Nice lingering dry chocolate. Quite an impressive beer, really.

(bottle) Black coloured hue with a beige and firm mid-sized foamy head. Earthy and leathery roast-malty aroma with notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla and a tinge of dark fruits. Roasty bitter flavour with a mildly alcoholic sweetness, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Solid leathery and a bit tarry roasted malt-character with hints of dark chocolate, liquorice and a subtle sour-fruity touch; roasty and chocolatey malty finish with alcoholic and mildly vinous notes. Very good. 03.III.13

Old but properly stored bottle gifted by Joes. Thx! Pitch black colour with a small light brown head. Smells roasty, some alcohol, sweet, malty, some chocolate, raisins, wood. The beer has a deep chocolate taste mixed with some raisins, malts, a slight wood taste, some coffee and it reminds me a bit of ’Haagse hopjes’ (a type of coffee-ish candy). Also it has some whisky notes, hazelnut and walnut. Full body and the low amount of carbo gives the beer a smooth silky feel. Quite enjoyable even though it should be quite old according to Joes. The best before date is August 2016.

50l bottle light gusher, BB 06/2017, batch@Gyle2318.

(Bottle, 0.5 l, at Pikkulintu, 20120929) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had roasted malts, glue, cocoa, hops and liquorice. Palate was full bodied and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa, malts, hops and bitterness. Aftertaste had roastedness, chocolate and bitterness. The initial impression of this beer was very good but later the flavour turned quite messy.
