Crystal malt, amber malt, black malt and roast barley in generous quantities generate a deep black colour and flavours to match. Roast bitterness, coffee and liquorice notes combine in a velvety rich malt texture. A full and sweetish body is balanced by traditional Goldings hops.

50 cl bottle @ Black Door. ”Gyle 2313”, BBE 06/2017
Aroma is sweetish with english toffee, some caramel and hints of coffee. Flavour is a bit odd mixture of ash and english toffee. Also some hay, licorice and hints of soy sauce. Too high on english toffee and a bit too sweet too. One of the worst imperial stouts I’ve had. A ”Russian Stout”? An English Stout, I’d say.

500ml bottle @ Black Door, Helsinki
Pours pitch black with a bubbly foamy head. Aroma of English toffee, roasty malts, hints of nuts and ash. Taste is sweetish and slightly roasty with a lot of sticky toffee notes, hints of anise, caramel and ash. Finish is boozy and malty , slightly roasty with some sweet notes. Quite strange, almost feels like a mix of an English barley wine and an imperial stout.

500ml bottle - what a nice beer! A classic Russian Imperial, although it lets itself down with the appearance. The head is short-lived, but gives way to a great aroma - smoky and robust nose, with hints of liquorice coming through. A thick oily body gives a memorable mouth feel, a rich bite of alcohol on the tongue and some real dark fruits in there. Excellent and worth every penny.

50cl bottle @ home. Pitch black, opaque colored beer with a big, mostly diminishing light brown head. Smell roasted malts, caramel, mocca, coffee and slightly alcohol. Taste is a mix of the same, also with some hops and very well balanced. Medium carbonation, full body. Very nice beer indeed.

Bottle from Fenwick, Newcastle
Appearance Jet black, frothy tan head that dissipates, good lacing.
Aroma Roasted malts, fruity berries, woody, some liquorice, whiff of leather, hint of polish, noticeable alcohol. Quite complex.
Taste Roasted malt, lots of liquorice, dark sweet malts, plain chocolate, some spicy hops, alcohol noticeable but doesn’t distract. More emphasis on fruity dark sweet flavours than roasted malts. No coffee.
Palate Soft carb, full body, smooth, sweet maslts. Finish - very smooth and creamy, chocolate, liquorice, light roast, sweet malts, a touch of coffee and warming alcohol. Doesn’t linger too much. The palate is superb.
Overall A very good imperial stout, not as strongly flavoured as USA ones, but well made with emphasis on fruit and liquorice and less on roast and coffee.

Pitch black beer, red hue, tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate, loads of milk chocolate. Roasted malts, slight bread, dark fruits and vanilla. Flavour of milk chocolate, cocoa, slight coffee, sweet malts, slight caramel. Silky smooth body, oily creamy texture, long finish of roasted malts. Some alcohol warmth. Somewhat reminding of hot cocoa. Very balanced. I’m really fond of this beer.
