Crystal malt, amber malt, black malt and roast barley in generous quantities generate a deep black colour and flavours to match. Roast bitterness, coffee and liquorice notes combine in a velvety rich malt texture. A full and sweetish body is balanced by traditional Goldings hops.

Bottle, 14C. Black with a tan head that fades to less than a coat. Restrained aroma of roasted malt, dark fruits, plain chocolate, coffee, licorice, vanilla. Oily body. Overt alcohol. Sweet with treacly licorice, dried fruit, vanilla, less roasted flavours than suggested by the aroma. Chocolate, spicy hop bitterness in a very nice long finish.A bit boozy and a little light on the roasted flavours for me, but it’s complex and harmonious.

500mL bottle, split with Matts_Property, pours black with a small ring of tan head. Aroma of sweet cherries, toffee, toasted nuts and some chocolate. Flavour is quite sweet and fruity, cherries, raspberries, maybe other berries, some chocolate, with a sweet, cherry-ish finish. Full-bodied, though the fruity sweetness is a little over done. All in all, solid impy.

500ml bottle bought at the real-ale-in-a-bottle-bar at GBBF a few years ago. Best between March 08 and March 13, according to the label. Dissipating head, leaving just a ring behind. Opaque, dark body. Dark malts and bitter liquorice to the nose. Confectionery chocolate to the taste buds, partly offset by dark fruits and bitter liquorice to the finish. Smooth and dangerously easy to drink. Nice (shared with Finn at a session in Tromsø, 16.06.2011).

26th February 2008 Distinctly brandyish malt. Light and frothy but quite heady as well. No fruit or bitternes or smokyness. Not bad! 3.4 17th May 2013 Tasting at Bruce’s pad. Thanks to Leighton. Almost opaque dark brown - black beer. Little pale tan head. Light airy palate, semi dry. Mild carbonation. Tangy dark malt, no roast or bitterness. Mild dark chocolate with a trace of tangy dark fruits. Finishes airy and slightly bitter. Interesting and well joined up!

BB Aug 2015 bottle. Flavour and carbonation holding up very well, very little sign of oxidisation. Creamy dark malts, a little brandy. Dried fruits. Modest spice. Fluffy and fairly dry finish. Think this will be good for a few more years yet. Excellent duration.

Bottle from Kris Wines. Pitch black beer with no head. Aromas of dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, ginger, burnt wood, roasted malts, caramel. Interesting. Flavours of coffee, caramel, butterscotch, licorice, dark chocolate, quite vinous. Man alive! You can certainly feel the alcohol in this one. Good throat warming qualities. Dry, warm finish.

Dark brown color, liquorice, coffee, dark chocolate, salty with a touch of candy sugar. Liquorice, dark chocolate, salty, with some hints of bubblegum. Malt accented. A slight whisky like burn at the start of the mouth. Lingering chocolately, liquorice finish with some bitterness. Nice
