When fans last gripped their glasses at the end of Game of Thrones' sixth season, the great houses of Westeros were on the brink of an epic conflict. Cersei had ascended to the Iron Throne as the first queen of Westeros, Jon Snow and Sansa Stark had just reclaimed the North, and Daenerys Targaryen had set sail for the Seven Kingdoms. To commemorate the coming mêlée in the Emmy® Award-winning show’s epic seventh season, Brewery Ommegang and HBO Global Licensing are excited to announce a new beer in their collaborative series: Bend the Knee Golden Ale.

Paying homage to the struggle for control of the Seven Kingdoms, Bend the Knee will be available on draft and in a series of three collectible 750ml bottles, all finished in matte black and adorned with one of the three Great House sigils: Stark, Targaryen, or Lannister.

Bend the Knee pours a golden hue with a large, frothy head. Both the aroma and flavor mix maltiness and citrus from the hops, while Ommegang’s signature house yeast produces prominent fruitiness. Wildflower honey added during fermentation provides light sweetness to the beer, which finishes dry and with firm hop bitterness.

Malt: Pils malt and flaked oats
Hops: Saaz, Bravo, and Styrian Golding

Fit for any feast table, Bend the Knee’s clean and balanced flavor and effervescent carbonation make it a fine pairing for a variety of foods including seafood and shellfish, roasted or grilled chicken, grilled steaks, and aged Swiss-style cheeses.

Bottle. Tangerine/apricot, yeast, biscuit malt, alcohol, and hay aroma. Hazy golden yellow with moderate head. Moderately sweet apricot, biscuit malt, and moderately bitter hay/alcohol flavor. Good body. Nice.

From a 750ml bottle. Poured a hazy yellow orange color with a small creamy white head. Aroma was light citrus notes, light grain. Some light boozy notes. Pretty easy to drink, though alcohol really sneaks in on it.

Pours slightly hazy gold into a tulip. Bright white head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing. Hot caramel and honey aromas. Dry and sweet with biscuit and hot caramel upfront turning to meadow and gras before the lasting slightly warming honey finish.

$9.79 corked bomber, Wine Warehouse. Pours pale golden with a giant, soft off-white head. Aroma is honey, floral notes, somewhat champagny. Flavor is way stronger than I’d imagine form the nose. Yeasy, fruit juice - including pear as well as some sort of dark fruit, honey, syrup, alcohol. Good.

750 c&c from Total Wine in Folsom, CA. Pours translucent light gold with a huge foamy white head. Aromas of yeast, clove, pale stone fruit. Med body or a bit more. Flavor is yeast, clove, fruit, to include banana, and perhaps even medium dark fruit. Dates? There might be coriander. I think I can detect honey on my lips. Not exactly dry. A bit earthy. Decently bitter. Overall it impresses me as very close to a Tripel. Quite tasty ale. Love it.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, bottled on 3/31/2017. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy medium golden/amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Thick soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, apple, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, honey, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with great strength. Taste of big lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, apple, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, honey, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate yeast spiciness and herbal/floral/grassy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of lemon, orange, peach, pear, melon, apple, peppercorn, clove, light banana/bubblegum, honey, wheat, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with an awesome malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero astringent flavors after the finish. Moderately dryness from bitter/spiciness and carbonation, increasing through the glass. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, and creamy/bready/grainy/sticky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal warming alcohol for 9%. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong pale ale! All around awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/spicy yeast, honey, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and dangerously easy to drink for the big ABV. Spot on example of the style. Nice honey presence with classic Ommegang house yeast complexity. Nice malt balance without being sweet or heavy. Fairly foamy, but not overly prickly on carbonation. A highly enjoyable offering.

Bottle at home. Just realized I missed #7 in this series. Anyways deep gold colored big frothy head. Nose is honey, malt, spice. Tastes of honey but not sweet, malt, yeast, some banana, earth, and coriander. Slight booze. Thicker bodied. Pretty nice.
