Ommegang's brewers spent several years refining their ideas of what a "perfect" tripel would be. In the original style, a Belgian tripel is a strong golden ale, from 8.5% to 10% ABV, with fruity flavors and aromas coming from the yeast. Tripels are simply brewed, but with great attention to detail. Ommegang Tripel Perfection goes beyond the exquisite attention to detail and adds spices to subtly enhance aromas and flavors. The result is a fine ale honoring Belgian brewing tradition, while also expanding on it in the new Ommegang tradition.

Tap at Rattle n Hum. This is my kind of Tripel. Pours a hazy, yellow-gold with a strong, fluffy white head. Potent aroma of bubblegum, phenols, yeast, wheat and booze. Sweet flavor, lightly bready and spicy. Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Finishes very clean, somewhat sweet. Great stuff.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s this beer poured a medium golden color with a medium sized white head that lingered and produced some lacing. The aroma was tangy and tart with notes of citrus, honey, sugar and apple. The flavor was tart, tangy, sweet and yeasty with note of sugar, ripe pears, apples and hints of caramel and spice. The finish was long, tangy and sugary with ripe fruits lingering. Some alcohol shows through. Excellent.

Tap, City Beer Store. Pours a burnt orange-gold with a nice sticky white head. Good lacing. The aroma has good hops, yeast and spice. Hops are citric, floral and a bit tropical, the yeast has a very pleasant earthy phenolic tone, and the spicing brings some nice pepper and coriander. Malt contributes touches of sugary sweetness and a bit of fresh dough. The beer is dry, effervescent and drinkable. Some hop oiliness. More malt presence in the flavor. Quite refreshing. One of my favorites from Ommegang so far.

Pours gold into a tulip. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Flowery cotton candy aromas. Smooth banana flambe with upfront dark bruised banana turning sweet and yeasty in the lasting alcohol burn.
