The first sip of this brilliant, red-brown beer reveals a robust mouth feel and complex flavors including raisin, dark bread, some sherry flavors sure to increase with age, resin hops, a touch of old barrel. With the finish comes the aroma and flavor of Columbus hops in your mouth, being followed by the alcohol warmth that can be felt down your throat.

Bottle. Pours reddish chestnut brown with tan head. Nose/taste of citrus, caramel, bready malt, toffee and pine. Semi sweet mouth feel with lots of citrus and caramel malts - like a heavily malty double IPA. Finishes with some pine and resin along with a touch of warming alcohol. Good mouth feel.

On tap. Pours with a clear copper hued body with a large off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aromas show large amounts of caramelization, caramel malt as well, bready, raisin, fig, mild floral, jammy, brandy, estery, mild fusel alcohol. Flavors are fruity, jammy, dry, faded hops, very bitter with a lot of alcohol. Medium esters, resin. A bit of an earthy/woody finish. Big, warming with a creamy mouthfeel.

Release #1 bottle from Whole Foods Market P Street, which means I’ve had it several months. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toffee malts, brown sugar, citrus hops and faint nutty notes. The taste is brown sugar, toffee, citrus, molasses, bitter finish and faint alcohol warmth. Medium-full bodied. Nice.

Courtesy of douglas88. Pours clear deep copper with tan head. The aroma is full with tart grapefruit, spicy hops, earthy hops, a touch of floral hops and faint maltiness deep in the background. The taste is full up bitter hops with bold citrus, floral, pine and spicy hops rider over the top of lesser notes such as earthy hops and faint molasses. The hops have robust bitterness and only a mild level of hop flavor. This hop profile has far more floral in it than almost any hoppy barleywine than I can think of. After having the pleasure of trying countless dozens of hop forward barleywines that are almost exclusively pine and/or citrus this floral component here seems out of place.

Bomber at Churchkey. Bright amber color, medium tan head. Aroma of pine, caramel, butterscotch. Taste has plenty of hoppy bitterness, a nice change from most barleywines. Nice.
