Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Bottle. Copper colour with a beige head. Aroma is sweet, hop, caramel. Flavour is sweet, hop, caramel, malt, fruit. Very hoppy beer.

Bottle, 66cl. Golden-copper, clear beer with a nice beige head. Malty and well-hopped aroma. The flavor is very hoppy for a Christmas beer, and quite piney, but it is definately nice. Bitter, piney and fruity finish. Full body. As mentioned, I find it too hoppy for Christmas purposes, else it is nice. (070608)

650ml bottle. Slightly hazy amber body with a beige head. Aroma is hoppy and caramel malt. Flavor is sweet, hoppy, bitter, spicy and really well balanced. Quite hoppy finish actually, nice Christmas beer.

22 oz. bottle, 2006. Gee, 6.0 seems a little light to be called a "strong" ale. Let’s find out: There is an actual heady smell upon opening and pouring. Nose of alcohol, then plenty of both malt and hops. Dark copper color, darker than IPA, with a stiff pale ale head. Really, really big hophead taste. The usual PNW’s are there, and whatever that extra hop is, it’s noticable, like sun-dried hay and roast chestnuts with pepper. A rich malt balance that demands to be heard. Some unnamed wassail spices, too. Dry finish appears later, no alcohol burn after the nose suggested some. Certainly different than any other hoppy beer I can think of. (Hey, this is the beer’s 666th rating! Oooooh!)

2006 offering...Reddish brown color, thin foam, fruits and malts wrapped up in a hoppy core with a bow affixed just so...palate is of bitter hops and a bitter finish as well...smells wayyy better than the taste

Dark amber with a good white head. Hop, fruits & malts. Easy alcohol & warmth. More hoppy - less sweet than ex. the Belgium "christmas ales" (American strong ale this is) Good malty caramel/brown sugar taste before some nice hops finishes the journey!

This is a solid session beer. Few hops and lots of bitter malt. It is more of an ESB than an American strong. Big, khaki colored head. Light spices. The hops are good and balanced.

Hazy ruby with a medium lasting tan head. Aroma is filled with hops, roses and citrus fruits and some plum and caramel. Quite sweet, but with plenty of bitterness for balance. Not what we in Denmark wuld consider a Christmas beer, but still a delicious winter brew.

12 oz bottle - Pours murky brown with a 1 finger head and some lacing. The aroma has malts and a bit of dark fruit. The flavor includes malts, spices, and moderate hops presence. The finish was mildly dry and had a slightly dissatisfying lingering flavor. Stylistically it’s close to some English strong ales I’ve had.

Poured a dark maple brown with a frothy, creamy medium sized white head. Smells of centennial hops and slight malt, can’t smell the Chinook, just the Centennial. That aroma is unmistakeable. Aroma does not foreshadow the flavor, very sweet, malty, brown sugar and festive but balanced. I just had an IPA so any true lasting flavor was lost. I liked this beer, might be my favorite holiday offering.
