Rogue’s annual holiday offering, Santa’s Private Reserve, is a variation of the classic Saint Rogue Red, but with double the hops--including Chinook, and Centennial, and a mystery hop called Rudolph by head brewer John "more hops" Maier! This holiday elixir is brewed with two-row Harrington, Klages and Munich malts, along with Hugh Baird 30-37, Carastan 13-17, and Crystal 70-80 malts, plus free range coastal water and proprietary top-fermenting Pacman yeast.

Bottle, 5.3%. Gusher even though it is quite cold. Nicely fruity hop aroma. Hazy brown colour, OK stable tan head. The flavour has some of the same fruity hop as the aroma along with a rather sharp bitterness. The mouthfeel is a little watery.

Bottle. Poured deep ruby with lasting foamy head. Much carbonation. Aroma of malt and hops, citrus faint. Very hoppy body with a lasting tangy finish. It’s almost hoppy enough to be an IPA, but not quite, and hoppier than a Cape ale.

22 oz bottle, received for Christmas. Pour is clear orange-ruby with a big beige head. Aroma of malt graininess, hop bitterness and that familiar Rogue yeast. Taste is rye graininess, some fruit sweetness and a big bitter finish. Nice body, really tasty and quite drinkable.

Not the biggest fan of this stuff. The aroma is pretty nice, equally bready malts and spruce or resin hops. And some Rasberry and Apricot smells to that. Color is more a clear brown than an amber, maybe copper. The Tan colored head is largish and stays a bit. Lacing is only Okay. Taste is nutty and malty and too bitter for my liking with a lack of character to the bite. Astringent and unbalanced. The mouth feel is a mixture of sandpaper carbonation and water texture. I’ll pass on this next time.

On tap at the Mad Mex in Cranberry, nice place. Smells a little strong and sweet, like many high alky brews. Darker than pale yellow, a little brownish like iced tea, nice tan frothy head. Decent carbonation. Pretty strong bitterwise on the first taste. Very clean taste with a medicinal sharp bitter bite. The taste is not as foggy as many high hopped beers are, this stuff is more clean cut on the palate. That sharp bitterness keeps building on the tongue and back of the throat. It is not so much as grapefruit rind as it is sharp, almost acrid in a good way. Overall, leaves and undesirable IPA back of throat presence that I can do without. Hangs out for quite a while in your mouth after the session.

Nice amber color with a rocky tan head. Sweet malts, citrus, fruity, grapefruit, floral and caramel aroma. Nice medium body and well carbonated. There seems to be more malts in the flavor than the aroma, though the hops are strong, as well. Toasty bready malt, citric hops, grapefruit, a little pine. This is an intense amber...though I’d call it an American Strong or at the very least a pale ale. I wasn’t expecting much from this beer but was pleasently suprised.

[b]bottle[/b] Copper coloured with a creamy head. Sweet, really hoppy aroma with notes of toffee and tobacco. Flavour is toffee, caramel, raisins and LOADS of hops. Not exactly a balanced beer but I’m a hop head so..........I think it’s great!
